"How's my tie look?" Norman asked, adjusting the striped tie around his neck. It was too tight, and he knew that with all the lights that were about to be on him, it would be stifling. An intern looked up at Norman, beads of sweat on his face. "Come on boy, don't be so cowardly. What do you think?" Norman repeated, eyeing the teenager as he finished adjusting his tie, then he grabbed his black dress jacket and pulled it over his white shirt. The boy opened his mouth to speak but was cut off by a door slamming open. Natalie Harrington, the lead reporter from NYCTV burst into the dressing room, a rushed look on her face. She was quietly talking into a microphone secured on her head, then stopped, staring at the intern expectedly.
"One minute." She spoke strongly, clearly annoyed about the slipping turntable.
The intern nodded, and rushed off to go do something else.
"Ms. Harrington, I assure you everything is going to plan. I'm ready." Norman spoke back calmly. He certainly wasn't going to let some old hag boss him around. He was in control here - they just didn't know it yet. Norman had already made plenty of calls and deals in the background. His network was extensive, from henchmen to politicians and everything in between. It's a shame he didn't have access to Washington - he had a lot of friends there. This conference was the final step, and he needed it to go exactly as he planned, allowing him to sway the public. "Let's go make some history, shall we?" Norman smirked devilishly, leaving the dressing room and emerging into a hallway lined with pictures of famous personas. Natalie struggled to keep up with his confident stride. "Natalie, i think you're missing one person from this hallway - me. After all, I think it only makes sense, don't you?" Norman smiled as he pushed open the double doors into the filming set.
A camera crew was already set up, and the stage was set - a large area flooded with warm lights, a table set up with two empty seats. Natalie rushed to one chair and sat down, messing with her hair as an AV crew set up her wiring and tested out the camera. An AV member also pinned a small microphone to Norman, trailing the wire under his jacket to a small box he stuffed in his pocket. He knew the drill. Norman was impressed with his ability to set this up, really. With the whole 'invisible field' around New York thing happening, the authorities weren't focused on him anymore, since it was hard to tell who was even in New York and who was outside the bubble. Norman used that opportunity to set up a public speech - sure it was risky, drawing attention to himself, but after what he had to say, he thought the public would rally behind him. And the deals he made with the New York politicians would ensure that the heat on him would remain relatively low. He watched as Natalie lit up, talking to the camera and introducing him, and Norman smiled and walked forward, waving to the camera. He shook Natalie's hand and took his seat, unbuttoning the jacket.
"Thanks for having me, Natalie." He spoke, trying to be as charismatic as possible.
"Well, it's not every day you get to interview a war criminal." Natalie laughed. Norman wanted to suffocate her with his bare hands, but instead offered a smile. "You said you wanted to publicly address the state of New York?" She asked, shifting her position in the seat.
"Yes, exactly Natalie. In a way, I wanted to apologize to everyone. Right now, I'm wanted for my crimes against Asgard, for inciting a war against them without proper authorization. I overstepped my boundaries, people were caught in the wreckage, and I am fully ready to pay the price for that. It was a grave error, and I deserve my punishment. I took my duty to protect people too far, letting it cloud my judgement. I only wanted what was best for the secutiry of everyone." Osborn spoke, his lines rehearsed and his inflection flawless. Surely the public would believe the sincerity. "But before I serve my time, I want to have the opportunity to help out this city that I love. A city that I helped foster with Oscorp. I want to try and aid in the effort of getting rid of this invisible force and free us from this trap. To do that, I need to be allowed my freedom, to work towards a better future for us all." He smiled at the camera as he spoke; the Goblin inside him laughed.
"I'm sorry, are you saying you want to avoid your charges so that you can help free New York from it's exiled state?" Natalie spoke. It was becoming clear that she didn't like Norman - all the more reason she should suffer.
"I'm willing to serve my time once we figure this out, Ms. Harrington. but Oscorp, under my leadership, has some of the most sophisticated science minds in the world today, and I intend to lead them to a solution. To do that, I cannot be confined to custody. And really, where can I run to, anyway?" Norman laughed lightly. "If people still want me to go to prison for what I have done, that's fine. But all I want to do is help, and redeem myself with my new actions at helping us figure this out...together." Norman was a born leader, and his words would sway people, he was sure of it. "These are desperate times, and I guarantee I can give us the stability and leadership we need to find a way out."
"Norman, can your crimes really be forgotten? Working with known criminals? Causing a massive amount of collateral damage? Proving your instability on live TV?" Natalie asked. She thought she had cornered him, but Norman was never out of options.
Norman adjusted his jacket, unphased by her accusations. "Natalie, are you aware of my time working with the Thunderbolts?" Natalie nodded in response. "I was forced to work with a criminal named Moonstone, who altered my prescription medication. I can prove this if you need me to, with blood samples taken after the fact. The medication she provided me damaged my mind, causing me to lose my grip on reality. However, I still pushed forward, leading the team and myself to kill the Skrull Queen, because I knew I had a duty to ensure people's safety, despite my personal health issues. By the time I had realized that the medicine was adversely affecting me, I was beyond help, and made decisions I regret. But now I am better than ever with a clear, unfiltered mind." Norman nodded. "I was the victim of drug tampering, but I can't exactly sue a supervillain, now can I?" He joked. "I'm almost like an addict who has finally beaten the monster keeping him dow - those were dark days." Norman spoke, giving his voice false emotion. He knew that appealing to the sympathy of people was another path to his redemption.
"Well, thanks for appearing on the show Norman. I hope the best for you." Natalie spoke, shaking his hand once more.
"No, thank you, Natalie. You're the first person to give me a second chance by letting me appear on your broadcast, and I hope you won't be the last." Norman spoke jovially as he left the set. Hook, line, and sinker. Now to wait for his public re-acceptance, allowing him his freedom to operate as he pleased. Norman returned to the dressing room and removed his tie, gazing into The Green Goblin's face in the mirror. "Ha...haha...HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"
