The realization had not gotten by Steve, either. Trapped seemed like the most logical situation. Thanos wanted to get any and everybody who would pose even the slightest threat to him out of the way, so throwing them in some pocket dimension or sealing off New York from the outside world or whatever this was seemed like a good situation. But it left him with a burning question. If he had this much power, why didn’t he just kill them all? Why would he expend the energy to imprison them? “I completely agree with you. But why would he keep us alive, why not just kill us all?”
He would never hear Spider-Man’s reply, as a horrible realization dawned on the webslinger. His concern for his family was admirable, and Steve had absolutely no desire to stop him. Steve usually kept referring to the heroes who kept their identities secret by their mask name just to make it a habit, but times like this made it so clear to him that he knew them for what was behind it more. “I understand one hundred percent. I can handle things from here. You go make sure your aunt is safe, Peter.” He gave that look usually reserved for the inspiring speeches, trying to express that he respected Spider-Man that much more for the heart that beat in his chest.
Steve then turned his attention to the monitors at the computer terminal, leaving Spider-Man to his own devices knowing the hero would not let anything stop him from what was important to him. As he scanned each monitor, most showing various parts of what would normally be densely populated areas in the city. But one monitor caught Steve’s attention above all the others. It was one that he assumed Spider-Man had highlighted because it showed the city limits. On screen a man was approaching the edge in a seemingly curious fashion. The barrier was not visible, but it seemed from the way this man approached it that perhaps it was distinguishable a up close. At first the man put his hand up, almost as if he was testing it like he was testing the temperature outside. Apparently deciding it was safe, the man did something that left Steve standing there, mouth agape. He stepped into the barrier and completely vanished. One second he was there, and a step later he was just gone.
This left Steve wondering how many people had attempted this same thing and disappeared. One thing was for certain, they had to find a way to cordon off the area because for all he knew that man just got erased into oblivion.
