Maybe I'm not perfect but at least I'm working on it. 22 is like the Worst idea that I have ever had its too much pain its too much freedom what do I do with it?It's not the way you plan it - it's how you make it happen. It's such a cold world and I can't get out. So I'll just make the best of everything I'll never have. Hello cold world! It was surprising Kate the number of people who were making it on her list of people to beat up today. They had managed to restore water and power to the city and emergency phone calls but the system was close to overload. She prayed that when people realised that they were safe – well as safe as you could be when you were trapped in a city cut off from the rest of the world – that it would all calm down and they could start to get the message out to people to conserve water and power but right now that was low down the priority list. Everyones main efforts were being thrown into maintaining public order.
So far she had stopped two stores being looted, Kate was trying her hardest not to shoot anyone today, it would be added to the hospitals list of problems and the least thing she wanted was more pressure on them. Things were bad enough as it was. Still she had that sinking feeling that before it got any better they were all going over a cliff of some form. They were in trouble and they couldn't let the general public work that out.
Kate stuck to the shadows of roof tops and fire escapes. She appeared to take own any trouble and nip it in the bud and then as fast as she was there she was gone. Her speed and stealth was part of her strengths she was after all a sniper. Her skills were surgical. Kate could take out a target from a block away with a silent weapon. Many thought bows were ancient and obsolete but they were so wrong. They were so much more versatile than a gun with a number of different arrows she could have achieved pretty much anything....hell even Kate was sometimes surprised at the number of shots that she managed to pull off but she wasn't called Hawkeye for any old reason now was she?
There was a soft sigh from her as she ran a hand though her hair watching the busy residential streets below her. “This is futzed up.” Kate told herself and the wind as she shook her head and looked out towards the skyscrapers of down town. From up here Starks tower was visible. The Lower East Side was a diverse place, gentrification taking hold since the 40s leading to it being safer the place had undergone an explosion in night life, she could make out clubs, make out the Bowery Ballroom that she had been to so many times she had lost count. There was a moment or two where she got stuck in the memory of running down the Avenue to the Ballroom with a friend from the subway trying to get to the venue so they didn't miss the band. The traffic had been horrible and they had ditched the car at a red light running out of the driver. Her father had almost killed her for it.
Those had been the days.
“So go downtown, things will be great when you're downtown no finer place for sure, downtown. Everything's waiting for you Downtown.” Kate quietly sung to herself trying to break the silence on the roof top. Well she liked vintage...she remembered stories of this city in the 40s. Bucky and Cap were full of stories. Hell she remembered that Christmas out on patrol with Bucky and how he had serrated her for not spending time with her family...then spilled all these old stories. He had even taken to calling her Uptown Girl because of her family. The Bishops had been Manhattan Royalty even in his time.
Looking at the history upon history from the rooftops and the tower just made Kate more determined to save this place. This city was full of stories that should be told.
You can't just stay down on your knees the revolution is outside! You want to make a difference? Go out and go begin it! Hello cold world.

[/i] farther. Only years of training enabled him to fall as gracefully as one could, rolling into his shoulder and leaping up on his feet, rifle in hand. He looked around in confusion, his forehead creased as he frowned, trying to figure out what the hell had just happened. This wasn't Washington D.C. No, as he looked around, he realized he had somehow ended up in New York City. He hadn't been there in years but this city was familiar enough to him that he knew it from some of its trademark landmarks. Yet that was impossible. He touched the earpiece, speaking a few words in Russian but there was nothing but static. So he was cut off from his handlers, had somehow been transported to a city hundreds of miles away, and of course it had been right before he had had a chance to reach his target. Perfect. Then he became immediately aware of someone off to his right and spun on his heel to aim his rifle at the slim figure who was focused on whatever was happening down on the streets below. He had never seen her before but given that he always treated everyone like an enemy, he kept his sight targeted on her, unwavering, his eyes cold and hard above the mask that covered the lower portion of his face. Moving towards her slowly, he was alert for any sign of movement, his years of training keeping his muscles coiled and prepped should he need to react on a moment's notice. She wasn't his mission and he wasn't one to necessarily kill unless he was ordered to, which was why his finger rested at the trigger but didn't squeeze. He had already assessed the current situation, the rooftop, any obstacles that could be in his path, and all the exit routes should they be necessary. He had no idea why he was suddenly here, but he would find out, and then he would finish the job in which he had been so rudely interrupted. It's such a cold world and I can't get out. So I'll just make the best of everything I'll never have. Hello cold world!
The beauty of this place always took her breath away, she remembered seeing pictures of New York City from the space shuttle at night, she could make out her street just about. She didn't knew this city would literally be the rest of her life, that all those lives living in street lights in the shadow of the moon would become her responsibility at such a young age. Sure the Avengers might have wrote her off but she had travelled the roof tops shooting arrows at falling stars. Those who had crossed lines be them friends or enemies. Kate hated to think of herself as having enemies. There were only two kinds of people in the world, good people who sometimes did bad things and bad people who sometimes did good things. Who was she to say who was who?
She could hear the noise of the city below, she could hear it singing out and while it might have sounded like static noise it was music to her nervous system. It was the sound of millions of lives being lived, of love, loss, fear, pain, love and hate and everything in between. It was a beautiful sound. Kate let herself soak it up for a moment, closed her eyes and let the wind pull her hair to the side. It was a reminder that it was going to be okay, there was a city below starting to come back to life and tick away. It was like a clock, ever reliable and if the world ended the sun would rise and this city would still be trying to pile on the Subway. It was just the New York way.
There was movement on the wind, it prickled her skin, she was a sniper essentially, Kate was surgical and precise, she had the added bonus of not having to wait for a straight shot...bouncing arrows of buildings was a beautiful skill but that didn't mean her senses were any duller. There were three options in her head. Go forward off the roof top, she'd fall but she would be a fast moving target and harder to hit, a rope arrow back up and she'd be fine, go though one of the windows below her and escape though the building. It would take forever for whoever it was to catch up and she would be long gone. To the side, arrow out and bow armed in a fraction of a second and face whatever it was with an arrow point but it was likely to start a fight. Lastly she could do nothing, she could approach this calmly and with nothing pointed being aimed at anyone. Right now the last one was her best option.
Kate turned her head slightly, just enough to glance at whoever it was. She hated when she was right, there was someone else here. Something clicked....she knew them...well at least she might have. She raised both hands, a universal gesture meaning she didn't want any trouble right now before stepping back from the edge and turning around in one smooth movement. There was bigger things to deal with. “You know....you could poke someones eye out with that Bucky.” She let a small smile break her features. “Seriously Bucky put down the gun we got big ass problems right now. You have no idea how big a problem we have right now.”
It was the coldness, the lack of reaction...the fact he hadn't even realised it was her earlier because who else would it be in this city dressed in purple on a roof top with a bow? Then she remembered what Captian America had said, that even if Clint showed up he could be from any time line, any universe, the multiverse was crashing into itself and everyone being displaced...it didn't bode well for the two on the roof top. There was a little red light flashing in the back of her head going off. Alarm bells. “Listen...I know you must be kinda freaked out right now...everyone is...and I know you...you might not remember me okay but just trust me for a moment and don't shoot me...” There wasn't any fear in her voice....maybe there should have been. After all only stupid kids tried to talk down a murder machine. Mind you if it didn't work Kate wouldn't hesitate to put an electric arrow in his metal arm. It wouldn't kill him but it would sure hurt.

"Who the hell is Bucky?" he said sharply, his gaze narrowing. Whoever that was, it wasn't him, and this girl was about to get a rude wakeup call should she try anything. He was very aware of the bow in her hand and the arrows on her back and while he was extremely fast, he never discounted someone being faster, no matter what they looked like. She continued to talk as if she knew him, which was impossible. He had never seen her in his life and things were strange enough as it was. Trust? He could have laughed (if he had the emotional capacity to do so) because trust was not something that they ever dealt with. Trust got you killed, emotions got you killed, and while this girl was attempting to portray someone who was calm and at ease, he saw right through the facade. He could have just shot her and continued on with his mission. That would have been simple enough, but he wanted answers first. "Where are we?" he asked, his voice still void of any emotion but still cutting, the tension in the air so thick that a knife could slice right through it. He knew, of course, that he was in New York City, or at least that's what he was observing with the buildings around him, but he had just been in Washington D.C., on the edge of a causeway, not some rooftop in downtown NYC.Part of him wanted to simply figure this out on his own, but this girl might have answers and unfortunately this seemed to be one of his best option. He didn't drop his guard, but he did lower the rifle, the light reflecting off the metal of his arm as he did so. Even with his rifle lowered, he was still just as lethal and could react within seconds, armed with a variety of weaponry at his disposal. She hadn't nocked an arrow yet at him, which was smart on her end. If she had tried anything, he would have shot her without a second thought. Even now, the only reason he hadn't was simply because she could potentially be useful, and he had been taught to never let anything go that might assist him. Even as he remained mainly focused on her, he was still trying to process what had just happened and none of the answers that were coming to mind made sense at all. Nothing like this had ever happened and him being caught off guard was not something he really wanted to repeat. Shit.
Different Bucky.
Kates expression softened, it was one of almost pity as she looked at him. He had no idea who he was. She felt a lump in her throat....Cap should be here doing this, and at the same time she didn't want Cap to see him like this. He'd been through it once and she remembered how Clint he said it was the most painful thing he'd ever seen Steve go though. To have your dead best friend walk back from the grave and into the world a weapon of the enemy. That was the thing that was dangerous about him...he was a weapon. Not the gun in his hands. That was just costume jewellery really. He could kill you with his god damn thumb.
It was the way he narrowed his eyes, the sharp edge to his voice.... “It was....it was who you were...before you were this...” Kate said almost tentatively. Steve should have been doing this but right now this man was not going to let her leave now without answers, she knew Bucky too well for that. “Do you remember anything from before they took you?” Kate asked...wow big question straight out of the gate but she knew he'd never sugar coated anything with her. There had always been this kind of brutal honesty between the two of them which she appreciated. Mostly because it ran both ways. He would tell her when to go home, when she had to stop...and at the same time he was one of the first people to have a hand on her shoulder and her back when she needed it. You did good Uptown Girl, I'm proud of you she'd never shake how happy it made her that an Avenger had been proud of her.
Then here they were.
“This is New York City...specifically we are...” Kate looked up at the building beside them, “Corner of Avenue A and Second Street and its...” She glanced at her watch, “about half seven in the evening.” Well the more information she could give him the less likely he was to shoot her right...if she made herself useful it would have been tactically unwise – he had taught her that. “The universe is....the universe is made of thousands of different worlds.” Kate just hoped he would believe her...or understand her...or....well anything other than blow her head off. “All with different versions of us...and they've collided together and dumped us all here...and cut the city off from the outside world.”
Sounded a little far fetched at first but the evidence spoke for itself.
At least the gun wasn't pointed for an instant killshot now. Kate relaxed a little, “The cell networks down, we managed to get it back up but its for 911 calls only at the moment...anything outside the city limits is cut off...we're completely isolated...everything outside of this city is gone.” That was the good news. Kate was going to save the bad news for another time. “My names Hawkeye...I'm an Avenger.” Kate said dropping her arm a little, it was starting to get tiring holding them up. “I know you...in my universe and you used to be...you used to be the Winter Solder...and then you remembered...” And sure they still called him that, the was his code name...but he had always been Bucky to her. “And you broke your programming and came home.”

What was she honestly expecting from him? She looked at him with an almost pitied gaze that only served to make his gaze narrow further as he scowled beneath his mask. She didn’t know him, know who he was, what he had been through. She mentioned something about him being someone before being this, whatever that meant. There hadn’t been much to him before he had become the Winter Soldier, or at least not much that he remembered. The Red Room was his life. He had lived and breathed that facility, his daily routine not altering from training new operatives and keeping up his own training when he wasn’t preparing for a mission or out in the field. There might have been gaps in his memory but that thought didn’t even cross his mind. Why would it? He knew who he was, what he was, and that was all that mattered. His loyalty to his country, to the Motherland, was unwavering and this girl, whoever she wasn’t, was not going to sway him from that, no matter what she told him. She asked him a question and he was tempted to ignore it, but if he was going to get any information out of her, he would have to have a two-way conversation. A flicker of annoyance was all that showed in his otherwise cool gaze. ”Before they took me? Sorry, whoever you think I am, that’s not me.” Finally she began to answer his question about where they were and he focused on that instead. He slung the rifle across his back with the ease of someone well-practiced in handling weaponry and while he no longer had it in his hand, that didn’t mean he couldn’t draw another one of his weapons within moments to deal with the girl if needed. This would give him his hands free should he need them. The Winter Soldier took a few steps closer to her, his gaze scanning the streets below and the city that stretched out around them. However he still watched her from the corner of his eye, muscles ready to react if she should try anything. The city was familiar yet unfamiliar and as she spoke, he absorbed her words and tried to make sense of what she was saying. Different universes? City cut off? He had never heard anything like it, but he was not one to eliminate the possibility. His training had taught him to never dismiss anything until he knew the cold, hard facts and even then a tiny bit of information that might not have seemed important at the time could suddenly become very relevant. ”Different versions?” he asked, looking over at her then, a slight frown on his lips beneath the mask he wore. If this city was truly cut off from the rest of the world, who all was here? He wondered if his targets would be here and even now, being in a completely different place and situation, his focus was on his mission. It always was. It was one of the things that made him such a ruthless soldier for the KGB – he was unwavering in his commitment to get the job done and do whatever was necessary to do so. Most of what she was saying didn’t mean anything to him. He had heard of the Avengers. His target was one of them. That had been part of the information he had received when he was given his mission to support HYDRA in their operations. Though then she mentioned his name and he looked at her sharply, his gaze narrowed slightly. Not many people knew him on sight. He was more of a ghost story to the world, slipping in and out of situations, carrying out assassinations and disappearing before any trace of his existence could be found. So either they had met previously (which could be possible, he wouldn’t rule it out. It wasn’t as if he remembered everything from the years he’d spent in Department X), or she was throwing out a guess that that was who he was. He debated about not even acknowledging the name, but at this point, there wasn’t really a reason not to. If she knew who he was, then she would be smart and not move against him. No one did if they wanted to survive. ”The Winter Soldier, yes. That’s who I am.” he confirmed with no trace of emotion in his voice. Names had little meaning to him. He had to be called something, so that was what he was called. She talked about programming, about coming home, and he moved past her to a raised ledge. Leaping up with ease, he landed silently and moved to the edge for a better vantage point. ”I haven’t been to the Motherland in years, but I’ll be home soon enough.” The term home was just a word. It was where he returned to live when he wasn’t out on a mission and that was all. ”So if we’re completely cut off, who have you seen here?” he asked, changing the subject to their current situation. If his targets were here then that was something he needed to know. He could finish his mission, then figure out how to get out of this city, and that would be that. ”And who trapped the city? Do you have anything to back your claim that this is true?” He looked down at her with that question, awaiting her response. tag Kate word count [/b] 1964 notes[/b] Just want to thwack him and make him remember lol! lyrics Dance with the Devil by Breaking Benjamin credit Rae of Sunshine! of Caution 2.0 made this temp!

He really had no idea. As he moved his rifle she did the same with her bow, putting it on her back and shifting the string so it sat across her chest comfortably. “Do you even know who you are? Or just what you've been told you are?” Kate didn't want her Bucky back...she didn't want to talk him into being the man he was her in world...she understood the differences but she wanted him to discover for himself. Allowed to live a life that he wanted to and be free to make his own choices. If he chose the wrong path they would meet again and there was a good chance they were going to be fighting each other but that was the risk you ran every day.
At least he acknowledged his name, there was nothing there though, Kate tilted her head to the side and watched him for am moment, now he was a bit closer she got a better look and there was just...blank. A clean slate almost. That was really the only way Kate could explain it, as if someone had just wiped away everything that had ever been there. “Really?” Was his resolve to that so strong? “Are you sure?”
Though the question was remaining...how did you explain to someone the multiverse? “The universe....is made of an infinite number of words...parallel worlds...with another me and another you on them...just somewhere along the way someone made a choice that changed everything. Every combination of everything that could be is played out in those worlds and every choice you make creates another....” To her it was normal, there was no hint of lies or even just making stuff up, it was hard scientific fact. “some people can travel between them naturally...Chavez can literally punch her way though them it's actually really impressive....some have magic that can do the job...some races built ships. The Kree chartered some of it...the universe I'm from is designated six one six.”
He seemed intent that he was going home....well back to the Motherland and Kate frowned a little. Yeah. Like that was going to happen. “Well hate to break it to you but...the airports arn't exactly open right now and I doubt even you could swim the Atlantic.” A flight home wasn't really an option right now. “A few people here and there...none of the team though, the city is in chaos though...” You try cutting of a city of millions and expecting nothing to happen, especially in the age of globalisation where the whole wide world was a touch of a button away.
Maybe she shouldn't have been giving away so much information but at the moment it wasn't going to stay secret for so long, people would find out, things would leak, they always did. Kate just didn't see the point of pretending. Though she was leaving Caps name out of this. Wasn't her place to fuck around with that can of worms. “You want proof go look at the city, try to watch TV, get a radio station or call someone everything is down...as for who well...can you imagine the raw power needed to pull something like that off?” It boggled Kates mind. It was beyond comprehension and sure maybe the infinity gems could pull it off like Cap said but Kate was withholding her judgement on that one.
“We're lucky the implosion that created this...mishmash of worlds didn't kill us all...it's little unnerving though I mean...who ever did it must be watching...I don't really like the idea of being a lab rat for them...” Kate almost cringed. Bad choice of words there.
You can't just stay down on your knees the revolution is outside! You want to make a difference? Go out and go begin it! Hello cold world.

He could have killed her when he had first seen her, but it wasn't part of the mission and kills that were unnecessary could be seen as acting outside established parameters. Weapons did as they were built and tools were only used for specific purposes. That's what he was. The Asset. The Weapon. Plenty of people had died at his hand but it had always been necessary. If they came between him and his target, they were eliminated, it was as simple as that. However, the girl was still useful. If her information led to him completing his mission, all the better. Although there was part of him that was confused as to how he was supposed to report back to Pierce when all communication lines had been severed during whatever process had transported him here. Was Pierce here? The KGB? HYDRA? He would have to locate his mission base next. A Weapon without orders, without a place to report in, was a faulty weapon, and that could not happen. Being faulty meant being wiped, being put in that chair and put through all the pain. "Yes." he said curtly in response to her barrage of questions about his identity as he stalked along the edge of the roof, scoping out the area. He finally paused, standing next to her but didn’t look at her, his gaze still focused out at the city below. "Tools have no names. There is only the Winter Soldier. That is what I go by and that is who I am." He didn't know why she kept pestering him about that. It was a simple enough answer. He listened as she explained the multi-verse and what she believed had happened. There was something in his head that clicked, almost an audible ‘snap’ and he looked at her sharply. In a flash, he had his metal hand gripped around her throat tightly, lifting her up from the ground. "Steve Rogers, known alias Captain America, Natasha Romanoff, known alias Black Widow, where are they?"[/b] The mission was always first and foremost and they would be here if what she said were true. He might as well cut to the chase as he leveled his cold, unwavering gaze with hers. He watched for any sense of hesitation, any hints that she would be lying to him. If this girl knew as much as she claimed. He was his number one priority target. The woman was second, but if he had to go after her he would. Then he released her as quickly as he had snapped and moved closer to the edge of the roof. Priorities. A Weapon must be aimed. Fired. He needed to go. When she told him that they were completely cut off, this did cause him to pause but only for a moment and only internally as he shifted his gaze out to the city, taking in the sights, sounds, and planning routes and locations to check for any clues or signs that his targets were there. "Having the city cut off matters little. The mission can still be accomplished," he murmured, more to himself than anyone else. He ignored her ramblings, focusing more on developing a plan. He had his orders. It was just the manner of which he was to accomplish them that was tricky. The Winter Soldier spotted a ledge several stories lower. It was time to get on the move. tag Kate

There was a sad smile as she tilted her head to the side to look at him, that logic was so flawed she wondered astonishingly how someone so smart could believe it. “There's more to life than being a tool.” In any other situation that would have been considered bitchy but Kate meant it. “The other you....from my world once told me...that even when you're in the thick of it it's so easy to loose what you are fighting for. That you can't let them take everything good from you. That there's more to this world than this and sure it's an ugly place but isn't it beautiful?”
People under estimated Bucky that had always been the problem. Kate knew fine well he could kill you with his thumbs. He was a killing machine. A man turned into a weapon designed for one thing but he had become so much more than that. For the huge majority of her life Bucky Barnes had been a figure in the history books. He snapped to her, she barely had time to format an escape plan. There was no way she was getting out of it though, it happened so fast if you blinked you would have missed it.
She felt her feet leave the floor, that was the moment fear flooded her. She had just enough training to know that she had to push it away. There was no panic. There wasn't the normal flailings of someone about to be strangled. Both hands came up to wrap around his, it was just the natural move, a reflex almost to get whatever it was away. Instead she lifted one leg and attempted to kick him right in the chest with her heel as hard as she could. It might knock the wind out of him just enough so she could take a breath. She knew she had to do it early before the reduced intake of oxygen started to screw with her brain.
Though truthfully she wondered if he actually thought she would give up answers that easily. Kate said nothing, she wasn't going to answer him, she just looked straight at him. Dead in the eye. She held eye contact and used every ounce of everything she had to fight the natural reaction to panic. If she did it would mean he was winning and even though she couldn't breath. She writhed, tried finally to gasp for air and then she fell. Kate felt herself hit the roof and breath in cold polluted dirty New York rooftop air.
She coughed, a hacking cough that sounded absolutely horrible before catching her breath and finding her feet again. He didn't seem all that bothered...he was still going to go for his mission and really she knew fine well Captain America and Black Widow we're more than qualified to deal with this...she wasn't. Kate had trained with the man and he was a fucking age ahead of her, he would snap her in minutes...but even with the display of intimidation she'd just had and the knowledge that he could kill her in a split second she still asked the question.
“Okay....you complete you mission. Then what? Then what are you going to do without orders?”

"You keep talking about the one you know. I'm not him. Stop acting like I care." he said coldly, glancing over at her. She was trying to compromise him and he couldn't let that happen. If what she was saying was true and there were people coming in from different universes around the city, then nothing she said about him held truth because whomever she was talking about was not him. He knew who he was. Russian, trained from before he could remember by Department X and the Red Room, and currently working for Alexander Pierce and HYDRA. He had his orders, his targets, and he would eliminate them. If the girl wouldn't give him answers, then so be it. He would find answers other ways. The Soldier didn't need anyone to help him; he had operated on plenty of missions by himself and had always been successful, so he had no doubt that this would be any different. She was asking him questions again and it took all his willpower not to shoot her where she stood just to shut her up. "I don't answer to you," he said sharply and then took the leap off the building, tucking his shoulder in to roll as he hit the pavement and then was back on his feet within moments. Using a grappling hook from his belt, he shot it across the alley to the next building over and let it guide his fall as he jumped several stories to the pavement. He had no time to waste on people who were just going to try and get in the way of his mission. The Soldier would find his targets. There were plenty of places he could look and soon or later, they would have to end up here. He was positive of it. Slipping into the shadows, he disappeared from sight. tag Kate word count [/quote][/b] 355 notes[/b] Mission, always. lyrics Dance with the Devil by Breaking Benjamin credit Rae of Sunshine! of Caution 2.0 made this temp!

While his voice was cold the glare said it all, that was the same thing Kate did when she was rattled and annoyed. He might not have said it but it was easy enough to spot if you could read between the lines and Kate was good at reading between the lines mostly because she said more between the lines than anyone else she knew. Kate watched him, he didn't know what to do, sure heh ad his mission but there was moments of hesitation and to be honest Kate knew he could have killed her. She was in the way but he hadn't. So there was something else going on but she couldn't put her finger on it.
As fast as he was here he was gone, Kate moved fast towards the edge the building, looking down trying to see what was going on but he was gone, away into the city to do whatever it was....she considered telling Cap but how did she explain that. Plus Cap could handle him, he had done it plenty of times before...she didn't know what Steve Rodgers was like from his world but from her's you didn't mess with him. He was another one that could kill you with this thumbs but at the end of the day it was tempered with so much love for the world around it and the will to do the right thing.
There was a soft sigh from Kate as she turned away, shook her head and shook it off. “This city is futzed. ”
You can't just stay down on your knees the revolution is outside! You want to make a difference? Go out and go begin it! Hello cold world. THREAD DONE YO.
