DESCRIPTION AND PERSONALITY
Steve Rogers stands at 6’2” and weight in at around 240 pounds. Mention his blue eyes and blond hair, and you’ve spoken about his physical appearance in the basest of terms. But those aren’t capable of accurately describing the spirit of America in any justice. He’s at the peak of physical condition, but aside from his physique everything else will be discussed in the powers section. No, the only way to do any justice to a description of Captain America is to lead with his personality. You can easily look at Captain America, but you cannot SEE Captain America until you get to know him.
Rogers embodies the very best qualities in not just an American, but in a human being. Only a few adjectives should suffice here, and the very best features that make up this hero are his humility, his grit, and his spirit. This sounds generic, but Captain America is anything but. Steve grew up as a scrawny kid in the Great Depression and his size didn’t improve much into early adulthood. Of course that meant he was bullied. Naturally he developed an intolerance of people who bully those weaker than them and this was a factor of his desire to join the Army. When Dr. Erskine selected Rogers for Operation Rebirth, he noted that, “A strong man who has known power all his life may lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength” (Taken from The First Avenger because of how it captures Steve’s humility).
When talking about the grit in Captain America, it’s used as a broad term. It’s referring to every hard road, every tough time, and every hardship that a person will fight through to achieve their goals. With Steve, that was joining the United States Armed Forces and helping to win the War. After becoming the Star-Spangled Hero, Steve would find himself and his sidekick (and later, the Invaders) fighting in only the worst situations. Yes, it was because he was the only person capable of completing the task, but in his eyes it was because he would rather risk his own life than the life of a single allied soldier if he could. The man would walk the hardest road imaginable if it meant just one less death.
Captain America is the living spirit of not just the United States, but of all peoples who desire and fight for freedom. This is another broad term that could encompass many things about the human soul. The best example is hope. Captain America can inspire hope in even the most beaten and downtrodden people, leading the charge himself into what he believes to be a better future. He’s an unshakable man whose values are always at the forefront of his actions. When others would turn their backs and run to save themselves, Rogers would take an additional step forward and show people that no matter if you’re one or a million, as long as you truly believe in yourself and those you fight for you can accomplish anything.
POWERS AND ABILITIES
Captain America’s powers are well documented and the majority are known to most people. These include:
Super Soldier Serum Enhanced Abilities
- Enhanced Strength. Cap is supposed able to bench around half a ton and it is said he has the strength of ten men.
- Enhanced Speed. He can easily run at Olympian level speeds and has even been shown capable of running at vehicular speeds.
- Enhanced Ability/Reflexes. Steve has the agility to maintain balance in almost any circumstance and it has been shown he has the reflexes necessary to dodge gunfire. Also, through training, he has also become extremely proficient in acrobatics.
- Enhanced Durability. The SSS has caused Cap’s body to become so durable that he can survive falls from great heights and take blows from super-strength individuals with no fatal injury.
- Superhuman Stamina/Healing. Much like his durability, Cap’s stamina has also been upgraded to beyond human levels. His healing is also accelerated because of the formula’s stimulation of his cellular structure.
- There are several other abilities that Cap has been known to have but they are too numerous to add (a quick Google search will give a complete breakdown).
In addition to his SSS enhanced abilities, he has also taken it upon himself to develop other abilities (or some are naturally gifted).
- Master Shieldsmanship. This should be obvious, but Cap is proficient in any possible way one can use a shield, his most famous being able to throw it at angles that hit opponents, bounce of objects or obstacles, and return to its wielder.
- Master strategist. A natural ability of Steve, he is one of if not the greatest strategists on the planet, able to plan for any conflict that may come his way.
- Master Martial Artist and Extremely Proficient with Weapons. Not going to list every form here, but Cap has had extensive training in just about every form of martial arts a person can know, to the point that he is the trainer in hand to hand combat for other Avengers members. In addition, he is well versed in the use of just about all firearms imaginable.
- Multilingual and Talented Painter. Steve knows several languages, including English, German, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, and Italian. He may also be partially fluent in other languages. As an add-on, Rogers is a natural artist and loves to draw in his free time.
Equipment – Captain America’s equipment is pretty standard. He has the iconic Vibranium shield that serves his primary offense and defense. He also has a utility belt that carries basic supplies like first aid and field dress kits. Also, his uniform. It’s more than just pretty colors, it is actually made of Kevlar, Nomex (a fire resistant material), and lightweight Titanium. The suit is iconic in its own right; mostly blue, with a white star EMBLAZONED on the chest. the mid-torso is vertically striped red and white. the forehead of the suit has the "a" for America and on the sides at ear range are two wings. When out of uniform, his get up is nothing more than casual wear; usually just a shirt, slacks, and maybe a jacket.
HISTORY
Steve Rogers was born on Independence Day in 1920 in the New York borough of Brooklyn. Losing his father at an early age, his mother assumed the responsibility until succumbing to pneumonia not too long after. Steve’s childhood was rough, being an orphan and all, but the frail child survived into adulthood. The turning point in Rogers’ life was an event in 1940. While attending a movie (remember, back then movies had a news reel lead-in) he witnessed the horror of the Nazi army marching across Europe. Outraged, he immediately enlisted into the US Army.
Unfortunately, the Army had no use for a scrawny, sickly thing like Steve and he was listed as 4F. He attempted to join multiple times by was rejected on all attempts, save one. After being rejected once more, he was approached by one General Phillips, who saw something in this ninety pound weakling. He offered Rogers the chance to become something more, as a part of Operation: Rebirth. The project was to create a soldier who to take on the Nazi army. This made use of two things; the Super Soldier Serum (SSS) developed by Erskine, combined with Vita rays. The painful procedure stimulated the cells in Steve’s body, turning him into a perfect human specimen (ironically, he fits Hitler’s ideal physical appearance but represents a completely opposite ideology). Although the project was a success, Nazi spies were in attendance of the event and used the opportunity to eliminate Erskine, the only person with knowledge of the SSS.
Donning an early version of the costume and gaining his first shield from President Roosevelt, he Steve Rogers began the fight against the Axis Powers as Captain America. Throughout the campaign, he would gain a sidekick – James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes – and a team – The Invaders – to help the Allies win the War. Towards the end of the War, Cap had been captured by Baron Zemo and taken to a base off Newfoundland but managed to escape in a plane. This would be the fateful event we all know; Cap was shot down and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, where he would become frozen in ice for decades.
Caps life after that is some of the most well documented personal history of all time. He was found by the Avengers and thawed out, awakening in the Modern Era. He would have countless adventures with the Avengers, battling foes old and new. He would change his costume a few times, always coming back to the red, white, and blue. He would oppose his own country to protect the freedoms of its people; he would even die for that. He helped a Norse God defeat a Viking apocalypse. He even stood on the opposite side of the battlefield as a mutant faction he considered allies. But after helping to stop the creators of the universe from destroying it and stopping Thanos from conquering Earth, he thought he’d be done with the Mad Titan. How wrong he was…
ROLE-PLAYING SAMPLE
He knew his arm was broken, but his whole body was wracked in so much pain he couldn’t pinpoint where and stay conscious. The shield felt like it was 500 pounds. He could barely hold himself upright but still forced himself to concentrate on the scene before him. Thanos, the Mad Titan, was fighting both Thor and Hulk simultaneously and winning. Tony was to his right, sparks shooting off his armor as it began to fail from the damage. Scattered all around him were other members of the Avengers, either unconscious or struggling just as much as he was to stay footed. As Thanos activated the Gauntlet and his world disappeared into white, had to know; how had it come to this?
“Tony, I sincerely hope you’re not saying what I think your saying,” Steve stared sternly into the glowing eyes of the armored body, struggling to contain himself from putting his boot right up whatever this suit had for a butt. Stark had sent an alert to all Avengers to gather at Avengers Tower. He had sent it with a dead serious tone that Steve seldom heard out of his friend, causing the Captain to become very concerned. His fears were confirmed when Tony explained it all; his Illuminati had lost possession of the Infinity Stones and they were reclaimed by Thanos. Steve stood up, walked towards Tony until he was right in the co-Avenger’s face and in a tone that both was both boiled in anger and calm as a field in summer, he spoke. “You and I will have a very long conversation when this is over.” Turning to the other Avengers he continued, “But right now, we’ve got problems on a scale many of us have never faced. Thanos has the Infinity Gems and with them can make the Infinity Gauntlet, giving him the powers of a God. And we’re the only thing that can get in the way of that. As an Avenger we always heed the call to protect this planet and every last living thing on it, but this different. I cannot, in all good conscience, force any of you join on this mission. I can only ask. Ask you to risk your lives. Ask you to risk the lives of those you love. Ask you to risk the lives of every living thing on this Earth. And if I can make a safe guess about Thanos’ plans, ask you to risk the lives of every living thing in the universe. When the Mad Titan’s involved, the odds are never good. If he gets that Gauntlet they’ll be even worse. But if we don’t stop him he will destroy the universe.” He walked over to where he’d been sitting, picked up his shield, and firmly affixed it to his left arm. “So, Avengers. I have only one question for you. Will you Assemble?”
They were always just words. Captain America just said words, like every other human being. But with him, those words always carried certain things; honesty, inspiration, and just a little heart that men like him had used during the War to make scared men brave and brave men strong. Tony was able to track the energy from the Gems to find that Thanos was in the Blue Area of the moon. They COULDN'T just fly in, Thanos would see that and destroy their ship before they could eject. No, they needed a much quicker and more efficient method. That’s where Manifold came in. The teleporter could get everyone there in one quick jump. As he stepped through the portal, it didn’t take more than a second for Steve to become aware that he might not win this one. For there, less than fifty feet in front of him, was Thanos. Grinning. His right hand covered in a golden gemmed Gauntlet.
Eyes shot open, instantaneously blinded by the bright noon sun. Adrenaline surged and Steve leapt to his feet, being easily reminded of every break and bruise in his body. Ready to continue the fight, it took him a moment to realize he was no longer on the Moon. He was back on Earth, on a rooftop, and he very much recognized the place. Somehow, he was on the roof of a building in Brooklyn. A bewildered expression spread across his face as he tried his communicator. “This is Cap to any and all Avengers. Come in.” Nothing. “This is Captain America. Can anyone hear this?” Still nothing. Gingerly using the fire escape to climb down to the street, Steve knew he could do nothing but being the arduous walk back to Avengers Tower. Throughout the walk he would make periodic attempts to communicate to someone, anyone.
