Stark tower, also known as the Avenger headquarters, was located in Midtown Manhattan. As she walked towards the building, Kamala tried to look as natural as possible. Back straight, eyes looking forward and blond hair flowing in the windy streets of Manhattan. Ms Marvel was coming back to the tower. No, she was coming back to a tower. The fact that she didn't know how to enter the Avengers headquarters wasn't going to be a problem. She was from a different dimension, after all. That's the story. People moved out of Ms Marvel's way as she went up the stairs towards the giant high rise with the giant S. But just as Kamala went through the rotating door, a microphone greeted her. "Ms Marvel. Welcome back to the tower. Can you tell us what is wrong with the city?" Nervous blue eyes looked up at the camera. Steeling herself, Kamala just pushed aside the microphone. Finding her inner Ms Marvel, she simply walked past, aiming for the main lobby.
The journalist was unrelenting. This wasn't his first time dealing with superheroes. "Please, a reassuring word for our viewers. You are investigating what is going on, right? How close are you to finding a solution?" Ms Marvel clenched her fist. Her eyes narrowed when the journalist rushed in front of her. "I don't have time." Kamala was very tempted to use her powers and push the young man away. She was also acutely aware of the camerawoman filming her from behind. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, Ms Marvel then abruptly turned around and answered, "The avengers are indeed on the case. We are making good progress but can't give you any details that could warn the bad guys on our intentions. Expect things to return to normal by the end of the month."
Mouth wide open, the journalist couldn't believe his luck. He started to note everything down, then said to one of his associates, "CNN is having a flash report in a couple of seconds. Send them this clip now." His pen was bopping up and down as he bossed the people around. "Make sure we are the first one with the story. Make it breaking news." The camerawoman started pointing behind him. Turning around, the journalist saw Ms Marvel escape from their clutches. "Wait!"
Kamala elongated her legs slightly. Just enough to rush ahead, and with a quick jump over some minor security checkpoint -the guards recognized her and didn't stop the Avenger- She got away from the pesky journalist. Hopefully the clip would keep them busy long enough. A set of stairs up, a couple of corridors north and Kamala slowed down. Nobody seemed to follow her, although very confused employees were staring at Ms Marvel. Collecting herself, she quickly asked, "Avengers. Where are they?" The employees, scientists given their white labcoats, just looked at each other before pointing up. "Yeah, thanks." Kamala was a bit snappy. This was already proving as awkward as she expected the encounter to be. And that before I even meet a single Avenger. Nodding a last time, Ms Marvel started to jog again, looking for an elevator up. She quickly discovered that Stark tower was a maze.

The glass was cold, and had the same airless, dead feeling that the hallways around here had. Molly was smudging it with her fingers, and face, trying to get a good look at what some of the more science-y Avengers were working on behind closed doors. At least she thought they were Avengers. Molly couldn't quite differentiate between actual members and the people who worked for the Avengers. Right now they were working on something shiny that spun around and glowed. The littlest Runaway had no idea what it could be but it was super cool!Avenger's Tower had all sorts of really awesome stuff in it! Unfortunately, Molly Hayes wasn't allowed to look at any of it. Or touch it. Or break it. Or even think about doing any of the above. Sure, the Avengers were awesome (totally not as cool as the X-Men) but she'd decided they were really reallllllllllyyyyy boring.Molly sighed and pulled away from the glass, leaving the best face imprint that the janitors would enjoy cleaning later. The little girl made her way back down the hallway she'd been exploring. Molly had been going through the floors exploring ever since her attempts to get the Avengers to build a giant blanket fort had ended well...fortless. They were all nice adults, but they clearly had better stuff to do then entertain her. Maybe Spiderman would come visit again and she could convince him to do something fun! Like webbing around the city again. She was pulled from her thoughts by a flash of blond hair and a colorful costume passing a hallway in front of her. The little Runaway's instant thought was that it could be Dazzler coming to visit the Avengers. Or maybe even the Invisible Woman! Molly broke into a run, her small feet pattering as she raced to catch up with the mysterious blond woman. "Hey!" the little girl called after Ms Marvel. It wasn't easy to catch up with Kamala. "Wait up!" She'd been jogging, like she was an adult with super important places to go, and by the time Molly's sprint ended she was puffing slightly and her face was tinged with color. Gasp. "You're Ms. Marvel!" the child exclaimed. "Are you here to check on what they're doing with the spinny thing?" Molly asked quizzically in quick, breathless tone. "Do you know what it is? Is it science? Because it glows cool."

Kamala was still running aimlessly across the halls five minutes after entering the science floor. Elevators. Elevators. Everything just looked alike, with no sign of superheroes and just a bunch of very unhelpful scientists. Everything just looked so alike Have I passed through here before? A flash of green made the young woman stop. She looked at some peculiar device spinning around flashing "Nope. That's definitely a first." Which was a good sign. If you were going to be lost, at least you wanted to explore new locations at each turn.
That's when she heard a voice behind her. Turning around, Kamala registered a tiny blond head sprinting towards her. The child, a girl in a weird outfit, stopped right in front of her, clearly out of breath and yet able to spout copious amounts of questions. Ms Marvel? Oh yeah, that's who she still was. Kamala felt like she was being tested. By a little girl in a weird outfit. "Yes. No. Yes. And it is kinda cool." That confirmed she was Ms Marvel, was not looking for the spinny thing, that the spinny thing was science (how could you doubt that for a single moment?) and that she found it cool. Kamala was a very effective test-taker. "And er... are you a fan?" The only reason why she didn't just disappear on the questioning individual, like she had done for the journalist, was that the girl reminded her of herself. Or at least a child version of Ms Marvel. "What's your name? And where are your parents?" Hero instincts kicked in very fast, figuring that this girl was wandering parent-less in a scientific research center. A building with weird machines that could probably boil eyes or burn your hair or stuff. "And how old are you?" Kamala always thought of herself as more mature than her age, but there was no denying that the girl was closer to her age than.... most of the avengers.

Molly blinked up at Ms. Marvel in a bewildered sort of fashion. The older hero was super good at yes and no questions. Then the questions turned on Molly, which didn't bother the little girl a lick. When asked whether or not she was a fan Molly nodded enthusiastically. She pretty much hero worshiped every…well hero. Especially any that fought crime in cool costumes like a real superhero."My name is Molly!" the little girl introduced herself. "I'm eleven, and my parents are exploded," which pretty much summed up her life in an eyebrow raising sort of way. "It's okay, though. They were evil. They were gunna destroy the world, and probably make everybody eat bran flakes." The way she told the story made it clear that she didn't quite understand the enormity of her orphan-status, and frequently even forgot that her parents were evil…and dead."Spiderman took me here after I threw a car at him," Molly explained cheerfully, her attention being drawn to what looked like a large laser firing up in a nearby room. She moved curiously closer to the window, but kept talking to Ms. Marvel. "I'm staying with the Avengers. They're pretty cool. Ironman is mean and smells like beers, and Captain America has really stinky breath. Do you think maybe Wolverine or Doop will come to visit? They're my favorites. Or maybe Spiderman could come back. I bet he'd build a fort with me."

Molly's enthusiasm was almost contagious, spreading towards Ms Marvel in the form of a big smile. Yeah, she's like a little me. Or at least, if Kamala had been blonde. "Nice to meet you Mo... whaaaat?" Kamala took a while to process the second half of Molly's introduction. "Exploded?" She asked, incredulous. The little girl's further explanations didn't do much to calm down Kamala. At a loss for words, with her mouth wide open, Ms Marvel just stared at the tiny one for a minute or so. Who is this girl? Why is she in here? Either she was lying, not being serious, or she was a mutant. Or both. And with a complicated history to boot. Not like you. Kamala bit her lip at the pointless negative thought.
The next round of explanations clarified things a bit. Keeping her tone light, she asked "And why did you throw a car at ol' Spidey?" Ms Marvel rested her back against the wall, listening to the little girl's answer. "And I guess you are super strong then." Kamala followed the girl's gaze, paused for a moment to admire the laser cutting through some metallic surface, creating what looked like a Moebius strip. The young woman then turned her attention back onto the blond kid. She announced that she was living with Kamala's idols. What would she have given for that luck as a kid. "With the Avengers?" Well, that meant the little girl had access to the higher levels. "Yeah, Ironman is a meanie." Pretty much the consensus in the fan community. Kamala was surprised about Captain America's description, however. "Tell you what, how about we build a fort right now?" Ms Marvel gave Molly her biggest smile. She was a weird child with an enthusiasm that just ran wild. Kamala needed to get inside, why not build a fort? "Lead the way, strong one!" Kamala pointed onward, hoping that it was the right direction.

Molly nodded when Ms Marvel didn't seem to quite get the concept of exploding parents. The child understood. She often had trouble grasping that her parents were dead and that she was never going to see them again. She also had trouble remembering that they were technically super villains bent on world destruction. They had, after all, always been kind to her. It was hard to believe that the same people that had soothed her after a nightmare, or had helped her make pageant costumes, or had gone to all of her soccer games could be super villains. "There were these big nasty giant things. They vaporized Alex and then our parents fought them. Then they exploded. We made it out of there on a giant frog." the little girl explained, only sparing the woman a glance, her attention riveted by what they were doing with the cool lasers. Her explanation was probably unhelpful. When Ms Marvel asked why Molly had thrown a car at Spiderman the little girl's attention went from the lab to the super heroine. Her eyes were huge and green, begging not to get into trouble. "I didn't know it was him!" she exploded. "He scared me, so I threw a car at him." it was actually a truck, but semantics. "And yup! I'm super strong! I can lift a dinosaur!" she added proudly. "I'm a mutant, but not a bad one like Magneto, a good one like Doop and X-Statix," Molly explained quickly. "One day I'm gunna join the X-Men and be a hero just like you!" The conversation moved on to the exciting aspects of living with the Avengers. Then Ms Marvel said the magic words. Molly's face lit up like it was Christmas and the little girl snagged the older hero by the hand and started prancing towards the elevator like an overexcited puppy. "You really mean it? You'll build a fort with me?" the child asked breathlessly as she led the way down hallways and stopped in front of an elevator, waiting for it to open so she could ping her card and watch the green lights flash that told her she had access to the higher levels.

"Nasty giant things? Like Sentinels?" If these even existed in Molly's home universe. Alex, Kamala assumed, was Molly's brother. "Giant frog, you say." That destroyed any semblance of coherence the superheroine had managed to salvage from the story. Molly seemed absorbed by the lightworks anyway, which made pushing for more details harder. Kamala didn't expect any more helpful details for now, given the circumstances.
Ms Marvel pursed her lips together in disapproval as Molly gave her feeble attempt at an excuse. Kamala knew about excuses, and she didn't rate that one more than a 3. "You don't throw car at things just because they scare you." Lifting her index, she went on with her lecture. "I hope you apologized to Spidey!" It felt weird playing the responsible adult. But I'll have to learn fast. She was alone in this city, after all. No family to hold on to for support. "A dinosaur? That's strong." Had she actually lifted a dinosaur, or was that just Molly's standard example of something really heavy? And a mutant. Bingo. Ms Marvel smirked. "The X-men, heh? Why not the Avengers?" As a true Avengers fan, Kamala couldn't just let the promising talent run off to any team.
Molly reacted even stronger than the teen had anticipated to the promise of building a fort. Laughing, she answered in all honesty, "Sure! And with your super-strength, we can add a fridge or two to the fortifactions." Ms Marvel let herself be dragged forward by the little girl. "You know, in case we need a snack during a prolonged siege." Kamala didn't really pause to think what the Avengers would think of the fort. This sounded like fun, and Kamala hadn't had a dose of that for a while now.
The two troublemakers-in-training finally reached the elevator. Kamala noticed the green light as Molly flashed her access card. Then she looked out the glass window. I wonder if that's what it's like to have a little sister. Being the youngest sibling of her family, she wouldn't know. And Kamala didn't remember if she ever dragged her brother into building a fort. She sure would have liked that. But probably not her parents. "When do you turn twelve?" the woman asked casually.

Molly nodded exuberantly to the questions she was asked. She lowered her head appropriately when she was admonished, mumbling a contrite, "Sorry." the little girl's exuberance died slightly. "I did! I thought he was a bad guy and he was gunna hurt me. It was dark!" she added by way of explanation. But then the topic rolled safely to the Avengers over the X-Men. "Because I'm a mutant!" the little Hayes girl replied easily, as though she had never even considered being a part of the Avengers when she could join her longtime heroes, the X-Men.SHe perked up once they stepped into the elevator and she got to swiper her card. She had short-term access to the tower. The hope was that they'd find her a more permanent location soon. Very soon if the Avengers who were tired of her being underfoot had anything to say about it. "A fridge!" Molly echoed the elder's plan exuberantly as the doors to the elevator closed behind them. "You're really smart and good at forts!" the child praised. "My Birthday is on July 11th," the little girl replied automatically when Ms Marvel asked. "Are you gunna throw me a surprise party?" the kid's expression brightened and she practically exploded from the elevator once the door had opened. The lobby area wasn't terribly exciting to your average eleven year old, but it had some couches she could pile up, and cushions on those. "Let's build it here!" Molly bounded like a colt into what was probably a lounge. It had a refrigerator in the corner, humming away, and a table they could use. "That way the fridge stays plugged in," she added with a nod. The space decided, Molly skipped off, vanishing for a minute or two before coming back with a gigantic pile of blankets in her arms that trailed to the ground and made each step a possible disaster. The little girl was oblivious to it, though, and dumped the blankets in front of the fridge before scampering off to grab the couch which she lifted over her head, her eyes glowing pink, and easily hefted to the doorway. That was where she got stuck. The little girl rammed the couch against the side of the door. "I can't get it throughhhhh," she whined.

Ms Marvel shook her head. "The Avengers take mutants too. Though I guess you could be part of both, like Wolverine." Kamala nodded to herself. It wasn't the most elaborate motivation speech, but she hoped it would sway the young mutant. The Avengers needed some new blood. Which they might not realize they are getting. The elevator was oddly silent. Somehow, Kamala had been expecting a robotic voice to at least announce when they arrived in the Avengers section of the tower. It didn't happen.
Molly complimented Kamala on her brain. The young woman rubbed the back of her head in response. "I hear that a lot." Not so much the fort part, but whatever. Maybe she ought to give engineering a try. Na, saving people's lives is better. Still, the teen was looking forward to building this fort in the Avenger tower. Realization of the coolness factor was slowly creeping in on her.
The little bundle of energy that was Molly announced her birthday. She promptly jumped out of the elevator in response. Smiling, Ms Marvel just said, "Well, it wouldn't be much of a surprise if I told you now." Darnit, July is coming soon. How did you organize a birthday party for an eleven year old, dinosaur-lifting mutant kid living with the Avengers? Hopefully, building that fort would give Kamala some clues.
Molly chose the location of the fort. Ms Marvel nodded, then looked around for more building materials. "Sofa here, cushions there." The little girl seemed to have everything covered. "And yeah. Let's just hope Ironman doesn't just unplug it on us. Maybe we sould make sure the plug area is well protected?"
The little girl disappeared for a while, then came back with a mound of stuff. "Careful!" Ms Marvel ended up in a more directing role, building stuff up after Molly brought it into the area. A detail attracted her attention. "Do your eyes always glow when you lift something heavy?" But Molly was too busy to answer straightaway. Indeed, she was trying her best to demolish a door with a couch -unless it was the other way around. Laughing, Kamala said "Tilt it. You want the longest edge to go through the diagonal of the door." Math rocked.
Meanwhile, Kamala was busy putting the fort together from the raw building materials. Giant hands scooped up a bunch of blankets, then covered any weak spots in the overall structure so they weren't immediately apparent. After a good ten minutes of work, the fort was starting to take shape. Kamala paused a moment to look at their constructions. "Hm...." The blonde head tilted slightly. "You know what this fort needs?" Kamala turned around to face Molly.
"A bed or six." Huge grin. "Can you get me those?"

Molly rammed the couch into the doorway one last time before Ms Marvel came to the rescue. The older woman told Molly how to tilt it, and after a few tries, she managed to get the piece of furniture into the room where they were building the fort. "Hoooray!" Molly crowed when she dropped the couch to the ground besides the fridge. "My eyes always glow when I use my powers," Molly finally responded to the question as she grabbed one of the blankets from her stack and draped it between the couch and the table before reconsidering with a small frown. The little girl turned to look at Ms Marvel for guidance. She had many more years worth of fort building experience then Molly did. Ms Marvel suggested they needed some beds. "Mattresses or the frames too?" as she bounced back across the room to comply. It was easy to grab the mattress from the room she was staying in. And then the ones from the next four rooms besides hers. It took some finagling to get the mattresses into the hallway, and then once she reached her first door that was another challenge. The girl ended up dumping the stack and pulling them one at a time through the door and over towards where Ms. Marvel was. "We should see if there is any cool fort stuff in the science lab!" Molly suggested as she hauled the last of the mattresses like it was a pillow behind her. "There is lots of cool stuff, and the robots will sometimes yell at you," she giggled at the memory. "They're funny robots."

Ms Marvel nodded when Molly explained her powers. "Cool!" The young woman went on to fortify the couch-table transition with some well-placed cushions. "We'll need a name for our fort." Hundred eighty degree turn. "Any ideas? We could name it after a ship." And by ship Kamala meant a pairing, true to her fanfiction roots. "Oh, and mattresses will be fine." The girl with the excess enthusiasm bounced off to grab those. She came back within minutes with mattresses of varying size and shapes.
"Whose is the King-sized one?" Perfect fangirl material. "What about the one shaped like an oval?" Then, remembering who she was, Kamala added, "It'll fit nicely as a roof to our fort." Molly then suggested grabbing more exotic stuff. Ms Marvel paused for a while, giving the idea some thought. Her right index was drumming against her cheek as she mused over the concept. "Sure. Just stay away from the lasers and anything else that looks dangerous." They didn't want to cause an accident. "And yelling robots? I have to see that!" Which meant she was following the little girl around again.

"A ship?" Molly echoed as she set up the mattresses. She was having trouble getting the oval one to stand up on it's end, so she pushed it to the ground instead in frustration. "Do you mean like a boat?" the kid asked as she moved another mattress. The king sized one made a really good wall. She put it between the fridge and the table and used the couch for support. This was a huuuuuuge! fort! But Kamala knew exactly what t do with the ovular mattress. "I got the big one from Doctor Hulk's room...or I think it was his. The pillows were green," Molly said cheerfully. "But I haven't met who lives in the oval bed room. I think it's the coolest room. I want a weird shaped bed," the little girl paused as she tried to get said weird shaped mattress up to be a roof. "Help?" she asked in a strained voice as she lifted it up on her tippy toes but wasn't quite able to reach the top of the fridge. Once the mattresses had been dealt with, Ms Marvel said she would be more then happy to help, and so the little girl eagerly scampered off to lead the way to the lab. "This way!" she announced with a hop and a skip as she led the way to what appeared to be a small laboratory. The glass walls and doors made it easy to see what was inside. There was a pair of robots cleaning, but otherwise Molly didn't see any Avengers.By now, one would think a group of adults would have locked the lab from any pint-sized intruders. But the door was open, probably from someone working in there having to leave quickly, and Molly had no troubles activating the motion sensor so the doors would slide open. She wandered in with the exuberance of a child entering a candy store."You are not authorized to be in here," one of the robots said in a testy monotone, it's optic eye whirring to focus on Molly. "Leave at once."Molly giggled, but ignored the robot's order. "Maybe we can find something cool and glowy for the fort!"

As the little girl jumped around doing the heavy lifting, Ms Marvel looked up to the ceiling. Her eyes remained concentrated for a few seconds, evaluating the distance. Then, the superheroine started growing. "Let me give you a hand." Molly was very strong, but not quite tall enough to place the oval mattress on the roof of the fort. Oversized Ms Marvel grabbed the corner and lifted it without much effort on top of the fridge. "There. Thanks for the hard work." Kamala paused for a moment, just taking in the glorious fort they were building. It wasn't quite finished yet, but already the structure imposed a certain gravitas onto the Avenger living room. "No one will be able to ignore this." And Kamala was totally going to take a picture of the finished fort inside Stark tower.
Molly's reaction to the word 'ship' but the fanfiction writer back into reality however. Wait. I have to be more careful. Talking of one true pairings, asking too many questions and taking photos were all not part of her new identity. Playing along with the mutant child, that seemed ok and fun, but Kamala couldn't let too many of her personal quirks emerge out. "Yes. Like the Titanic." She paused for a moment. "Or the Enterprise. Something that didn't sink or crash." The discussion then returned to the beds. Smiling, Ms Marvel asked, "What shape would you want your bed to have?" Kamala used the occasion to change back to her normal size.
The pre-teen then led the way to the lab. She seemed to still have plenty of energy to spare, jumping around, dodging robots and marveling at things. Kamala on the other hand, tried to walk calmly through the room. She was supposed to know what she was doing. But inside her head, the teen wanted to fiddle with all the gadgets that the Avengers were hoarding in this lab. "She's with me." Ms Marvel interrupted the robot, hoping it would shut up. Maybe it would even follow orders. "Robot, can you locate us something shiny, glowing and non-explosive? We need it to construct a fortification." Resting her right hand against her hip, Kamala then waited for the metallic man's response while keeping an eye on Molly.

Molly didn't quite understand the bit about ships. She wrinkled her nose. "That's an old spaceship from that ancient show Gert told me about. I don't think we wanna name our fort after a smelly old spaceship." Molly obviously had limited knowledge of all things Star Trek. But talking about bed shapes made more sense."I think a star shaped bed would be cool!" Molly decided. "Or maybe one that's shaped like a heart!" the little girl prattled off shapes as she bounced through the laboratory. The robots regarded her warily, if that was in fact something robots could do, as she found a power tool and switched it on giggling as the bit spun in the drill. The robot was silent a moment, a soft noise letting Ms. Marvel know she was being scanned. "Authorization sigma 402. Valid." it intoned. "Follow the floorlights to your destination," and like in an airplane some softly glowing perforated strips showed the way towards a shelving unit in the back. A long armed robot pointed as well, towards a box labeled flashlights.

Kamala felt a bit hurt when the younger girl treated one of her fandoms like old junk. But she knew better than to complain. "What do you want to call it then?" The teen always won sibling fights by taking the moral high ground. Plus, she was genuinely keen to learn more about Molly's interests. She seemed like she grew up in a mutant household. What would it be like to know you had powers right from your birth? I mean, I just learned about mine three weeks ago. Which kinda made Molly her senior. A weird thought. "You mentioned your parents were villains. What about your siblings? Any other relatives that were superheroes or villains?" The discussion then quickly returned to bed shapes, where Kamala mostly had to agree with the girl. "Yeah, or moon shaped. You could even place a table between the two edges of the moon." Kamala had been giving a lot of thought recently to furniture placement. She had to work with minimal budget in her new place and that led to creative solutions.
Ms Marvel sighed in relief when the robot accepted her identity. Then the cool floorlights led the way. Moving forward, the teen mentally pictured a treasure trove of gadgets and inventions to add to the fort. The reality was a lot more mundane. "Flashlights? Come on." The blonde kicked the box. "I'm sure we can find something better than that." With or without the robots help. She then proceeded to scavenge some interesting devices from a nearby table. They didn't seem quite finished, but gave interesting lights and didn't have any labels indicating danger.
The duo stayed a little bit longer before returning to the fort. That's when Kamala heard some noise. She wasn't sure if it was the sound of the elevator door opening, someone flying through a window or another completely unrelated sound. The superheroine didn't wait to see and grabbed Molly's hand, before plunging head first into their fort. In the process, Ms Marvel shrunk to the kid's size. "And now we are in this together." She whispered. "We defend Fort Whateever-its-name till the bitter end!" And with that, she closed the entrance they had used. The fort was now sealed. Inside, the only source of light came from the fridges. Ms Marvel grinned, letting the light reflect on her white teeth. Smiling was something she was very good at. That, and building forts.
