***************************************** ~'And Hansel said to Gretel, "Let us drop these breadcrumbs so that together we find our way home. Because losing our way would be the most cruel of things"....' ~
It was funny, random memories that would surface sometimes; strange in their uncanny ability to pop into mind with their poignancy and nostalgic significance. Clint had teased her once for not knowing any of the classic childhood stories but Red Room didn't believe in Fairy tales for children she had said. So one Christmas he gets her The Golden Book of Fairy Tales for no other reason than it was a shame she didn't know them. Now here in this city having crossed paths with a man so clearly from her past just cresting upon remembrance she felt like Gretel, in the forest; lost.
~Because losing our way would be the most cruel of things...~
The last of her blood swirled down the sink as she finished washing it off from her hands and face. From the mirror she could see the bruising and contusions on various parts of her body; the fight wasn't particularly pretty at first then again since when was battling for one's life ever pretty? Still it was a fight she got to walk away from so 'Win' right?...riiiiiiight.
Didn't feel like win. It felt more like ass. Her body ached and begged to just collapse on the bed, hell at this point she'd collapse on the floor if it wasn't for the fact that it was pretty disgusting. It was an old abandoned KGB safehouse one that surprisingly was similar to the one on her 'world'. Boy was that still trippy and weird to even think, 'her world'. She understood the science of it, could even grasp the possibility but still even in the wake of it all it sometimes just felt so surreal.
Moving back out into the living room she passed by the bookshelf where there were a few sparse books some in Russian some in English, even some board games like Monopoly, Risk and Supremacy and a deck of cards. Some of the items were familiar but others were not; the same, but different this world was. Natasha's fingers brushed against the bookshelf searching for that book but the golden book of fairytales wasn't there. If it was her world it would have been; left right on the second shelf always within reach. But while the location was the same, and many of the things were similar, it wasn't exactly her 'home' and so a lot of the personal touches were missing. Like the ridiculous childish book Barton got her that while she scoffed at it at first it had grown to be one of the few things she cherished in this world and gave her some semblance of peace or escape. She loved reading Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel was one of her favorites but Cinderella was just plain ridiculous. Then again some people would argue that a wolf dressing up like grandmother was ridiculous too, but Natasha would argue that it was no more ridiculous than the belief in love. Like the story books, love was for children. Still though, those stories seemed to bring a silly sense of comfort to her. Sadly the book wasn't there so Natasha resigned to head towards a small compartment she hoped would be there which stocked or should have stocked some liquor because god damn it she needed a drink with all the craziness going on here.
With a small smile at the sight of the alcohol being there Natasha pulled out the bottle of vodka and a small glass. It was good to know that at least some things in the universe remained constant; like old KGB safe houses that still had a stash of alcohol and weapons. Natasha was about to move back across the room to have a seat on the couch when there was a noise that alerted her of the presence of another and setting down the glass and bottle Natasha pulled out her handgun and killed the lights and in the darkness of shadows she stalked. Her current injuries and pains forgotten in the fraction of a second that danger pressed upon her. This was Hell's Kitchen after all, Hand territory and hell she already had a HYDRA assassin come try to killer her before so what else did this place want to throw at her. Well she wasn't going to stick around and wait for death, she was gonna do what she always did and flank it. So in the cover of darkness she silently stalked the light sounds of entry.

Clint was tired. Not physically tired, but mentally tired; mostly of the bullshit that his life was constantly encapsulated in. All he had wanted were some damn answers as to what the hell had happened to SHIELD and then maybe a strong drink, some melatonin, and a good night's rest in what many had referred to as his 'nest'. He didn't see why everyone didn't just sleep in a loft bed so that they would have the advantage were they assaulted in the middle of the night, but that was neither here nor there.
Instead, he had been sucked into some alternate dimension, dumped into a body of water, had one of his hearing aids fried, and been informed not-so-pleasantly that he had a sidekick who wasn't actually a sidekick. Now, still soaking wet and down a working ear, Clint was trying to move through New York without drawing any additional attention to himself.
He had realized he wasn't far from Hell's Kitchen, which meant that there should have been one of Natasha's safe houses there. Well, if this Natasha was like his Natasha there would be.
My Natasha...
He chuckled to himself at the thought. She'd kick his ass if he ever called her that, but he wasn't really sure how else to differentiate the different Natasha's.
Mind settling back on the task at hand, Clint drew his bow and nocked a single arrow as he entered the old safe house, growling softly as the wood creaked under the pressure of his hand. Couldn't have it easy, now could he?
Lights quickly flickered out, alerting him to the fact that someone was in fact inside, causing muscles to tighten across his back. Give me a reason... He was itching to let the arrow go.
Between the limited visibility in the darkness and the deafness on one side, Clint knew he was at a disadvantage. He clicked a button on the bow, activating a small pin light to at least let him see what he would be shooting at.
He felt her before he saw her, sensing the presence of someone behind him. Turning quickly while barrel rolling away, Clint aimed the arrow at the chest of the person standing in front of him. He could make out the glint of a gun pointed at him, causing him to tense up before the pin light caught of glimpse of firey red hair.
"Tasha?"
Clint didn't lower the arrow, unsure of how whichever Natasha he was talking to would react to him. They hadn't always been on the best of terms, after all. And with the surprises that had been sprung on him already, he'd rather be safe than sorry.
"Please, for the love of God, tell me you know who I am, because I can't really deal with another version of someone I know right now. I've had enough surprises for one day."

*****************************************
She waited a moment and allowed her eyes to adjust to the darkness before moving. With silent footfalls she moved gun trained and at the ready with the safety off. It was then she saw the shadows undulate in the near distance, the shift in silhouettes told Natasha the intruder knew his way around shadows as well but there was also something familiar in its movements. She moved to flank the silhouette and get a closer perspective but never once did she lower her guard. It seemed though her movements had alerted him and she internally cursed herself for being detected. She instinctively moved in on the target in an effort to keep some initiative in the attack but the shadowed figure turned quickly rolling away, and aimed an arrow at her chest just as she came in at the same time to aim her gun at his head.
Stalemate.
It was a Mexican standoff each weapon trained with a kill shot and for a fraction of a second as the two assassins stared down and trained their weapons upon one another and suddenly time slowed down at that precipice of a moment where everything hung on a balance, like a roller coaster just cresting its first fall. Gun clicked and aimed just as bow string drew and tensed. The pin light of his weapon caught the glimpse of her fiery red hair just as a lancet of moonlight from the window flashed on familiar blue eyes.
"Tasha?"
"Clint?" she had said at the same time he had uttered her name in that way that was reminiscent in tone and inflection of the man she knew.
And just like that time collapsed and sped right back up like that raging first drop of a roller coaster but neither lowered their weapons just yet. Natasha needed to be sure he was who she thought he was and it seemed Clint was considering the same since he didn't lower his weapon and well neither did she.
"Please, for the love of God, tell me you know who I am, because I can't really deal with another version of someone I know right now. I've had enough surprises for one day."
Yup that was Clint alright; the tone and inflection was unmistakable.
And it was then that Natasha lowered her weapon and put the safety on. That was her Clint or well the Clint of her world and Natasha couldn't help but curl her lips into an almost smile at the sound of exasperation he had. If she were anyone other than herself she would have closed the distance and hugged him. It was a bit surprising that urge but then again she hadn't seen him in months, discovered SHIELD had been compromised and she'd basically been a HYDRA lacky all theses years, been chased and shot at, dropped into this world and nearly killed again by the Winter Soldier only to have him upend her world with a revelation of her past. God if she had been ever lost and needed someone it was Clint. Not that she'd ever actually admit it out loud. Natasha didn't really do Hallmark moments. She actually clammed up more or deflected when things got a bit too close to home, but Clint was the closest thing she had to a friend and just the sight of him brought on a small sense of relief and comfort that surprised even herself.
"You and me both."she replied in her usual dry and unreadable tone as she holstered her weapon moving to turn on the lights. "And if it's all the same to you, I'd like this encounter to not end up breaking the rest of the furniture."
The lights flickered on then and the place looked a bit like a war zone equipped with bullet holes on the walls. For a moment Natasha winced as the lights painfully flashed on but it didn't take long to acclimatize herself to the lighting once more. "I've kinda been having a craptastic day so far, you?" she said as she moved to retrieve the alcohol and glass she'd put down earlier and went to grab a second glass about to pour him some too. It was then when she turned that her injuries would be more noticeable but she seemed to not even be phased by them and really it wouldn't be any different than other times Clint had seen her in. Natasha walked over to close the distance between them and cast Clint a small smirk his way in an almost 'I'm glad you're here' kind of way as she offered him one of the glasses of alcohol.
"You kinda look like you need some too." Natasha said. She wasn't really sure if he did but offered him the liquor all the same. Drinking alone always sucked.
