Why do people always assume I'm lying?

Who didn't love sight seeing? Certainly not Loki. He spent ages building up a collection of perfect images on his Starkphone. From pictures of Yggdrasil, to heroes and villains and monuments. Who didn't love getting these things? And Loki had found out that one could also take pictures of one self. Was there anything these mortals didn't have? He loved the technology. Even if he was the only Asgardian to enjoy all this. At least he could be bothered to keep up with the times. And there was no way that he was addicted to all this technology... Even though he kept his phone on him at all times and took every available time to use it. Well, he didn't get all the pictures he wanted. He supposed he could have gotten some pictures of Molly's glowing hair when she threw a car at those bullies but he had just ended up here and everything was awkward and annoying. Still was awkward and annoying. No one had found a way back home. Loki missed home. And he had such an important task to do when he was dragged here.
Still, what do they say? Always live in the now? Even if they didn't say that, Loki was doing his very best to do that. No point dwelling too much on something he couldn't dwell on, was there? The boy sighed and quickly took a picture of several birds that were hanging around hopeful of some food. Maybe he shouldn't have taken that bread from Avenger's Mansion to feed the birds with. It had just seemed like a good idea at the time. And maybe he shouldn't have left to get here as early as possible before everyone else came. All the other people could have distracted the birds and probably fed them as well. Although he had been told that less people were sight seeing at the moment. Due to the fact that they were all stuck in New York. No one knew how to live a little, did they?
Turning the Starkphone around, Loki managed to get his picture taken with the statue of Liberty behind him. Ikol was less than amused at the young trickster's actions. "You have too much fun," Ikol commented and the boy chuckled, leaning out across the edge to look down at the sea before suddenly turning and taking a picture of the startled birds who had moved forwards in their eternal hopefulness and under the assumption that the child wouldn't suddenly turn to look at them. He rolled his eyes. It was nice to have the chance to have fun. To be a child. Which was why he was dressed in casual clothes rather than his Asgardian garb. He just wanted to be normal. No one staring at him. So he wore loose black trousers and a green shirt.
The weather was rather cold but even with his thin shirt, Loki didn't notice. It was simply a morning to him. Nice and cool. Extreme temperatures had never been so much of a bother to him or the beings that raised him. Suddenly, he heard a call from Ikol and he turned to stare at the bird that was flying towards him, wings beating against the air. "What is it, Ikol?" He asked the magpie. "It's Norman Osborn. I believe he has sought you out!" Loki didn't bother asking how Ikol knew that Osborn had sought them out. Ikol's mind was more villainous than his own would ever be. Ikol knew how such minds worked. "And this disguise will not fool him," Loki muttered.
Damn it. He had been hoping that because he said he would infiltrate Avenger's Mansion (and had managed to get a place there were he was happily living), the infamous business man would stick clear of him, either to avoid blowing his cover or to avoid a confrontation with the heroes, something that Loki had suggested he should do. Apparently he wasn't going to be so lucky and Loki made sure to move away from any edges. Better safe than sorry, right? Ikol circled above him before moving to sit on the railing that stood closest to him. Loki was left with an uneasy feeling that to Ikol, this was rather akin to watching a show. Loki liked television and the drama mortals put on for entertainment. He didn't so much like being the drama.

"Damn it damn it DAMN IT!!!" Norman yelled, tossing the remote in his hand a the TV screen so hard the device rocked backwards, splitting with a crackling noise. The image that was present on it fizzled and faded before returning jaggedly. It was a news reporter discussing that Kitty Pryde, otherwise known as Shadowcat, had been spotted in New York. Norman stormed to the other side of the room and slammed his hands on this desk in frustration. He could feel himself starting to sweat as a scowl crept across his face - luckily he was alone, he wouldn't dare let anyone else see him in this moment of weakness. He was the great Norman Osborn, and people needed to know that. They needed to know that nothing got under his skin, even when it did. Everything was taking too long. Where the hell was Winter Soldier? Why hadn't Doom contacted him? What was Loki doing? While he was relegated to sitting back and twiddling his thumbs, even more heroes were flowing into New York, stifling him. His schemes were getting harder and harder to orchestrate, and Norman was feeling cornered. He needed leverage, and he needed it sooner rather than later.
Norman let out a sigh and closed his eyes, trying to regain control of himself. What he really needed was Loki to come through for him. The trickster had more than enough time to make some progress on the Avengers infiltration - why hadn't Norman heard from him? What was he doing? And why was he content to not harm these heroes? It didn't make any sense. Was Loki trying to make some sort of power play? Work with the Avengers? Norman's eyes shot open as the questions swirled in his mind, his thoughts becoming an endless swirl of paranoia and distrust. Was Loki selling Norman out? Was he secretly forging an alliance with those heroes and not telling Norman? It was teetering on the edge of a dangerous situation, with the only thing holding it from tipping being Norman's trust of the god.
"Norman you fool! Why would you trust that worm?" The Green Goblin bellowed disapprovingly in Norman's head. Norman grasped it, his fingers digging into his hair as he tried to control himself. He needed control.
"Loki helped us. We need him as an ally..."
"WE DON'T NEED ANYONE! You are not so weak that you need to rely on others! Loki is the one that convinced us to attack Asgard - he's the reason we failed! And he is leading us down the wrong path AGAIN!"
Norman struggled, slumping into his chair. His body tensed up as he tried to sort thought his thoughts. More than anything else, he needed to stay rational at a time like this and not compromise himself. He needed to know he could trust Loki - it was the only way. With someone like that, words were not enough. Norman would need proof. He needed to scrutinize everything at this point - things were too fragile to leave to chance. And Loki was a big chance he had taken.
Norman had work to do.
---
Loki was hard to find sometimes - after all, he was a legendary trickster. But Norman had a small team of his men keeping tabs on the boy as much as possible. The Scriers - they were his followers, his worshipers - and they were now embedded in his company. They were the only people he trusted with his extraneous plots and tasks when he needed help. They weren't the most competent individuals, but could at least be his eyes on the streets. And they picked up Loki at Liberty Island. A peculiar spot, to be sure, and Norman couldn't help wonder what the boy was doing there.
Norman stepped onto the tourist hotspot from his private boat, smiling at a couple people that noticed him. He showed the security guards the necessary paperwork for his arrival on an unsanctioned transport, and shook hands before walking off. He was glad Loki was here, actually - it helped Norman's image to appear at the Statue of Liberty, a spot of national pride and now more than ever, a sign of freedom and autonomy in a restricted world. Now that the public was warming up to Norman, it made him seem more trustworthy and believable. What fools. A man took a picture with Norman, a woman shook his hand, a family hugged him and encouraged his efforts. Norman couldn't help but bask in the glory. He was getting the recognition he deserved - he was the true hero, and he deserved the attention, deserved to be noticed for his efforts. Soon these simpletons would be bowing to him once we controlled New York, and would believe in him every second of every day. There were some that shot him suspecting looks, but they were few and far between.
Finally Norman broke from the crowds and saw Loki sitting on a staircase. The boy looked different - certainly less ornately dressed, but Norman still recognized the child. A dark smile spread across Norman's face as he advanced towards the boy, adjusting his business suit as he stepped forth. He looked around - the spot was mostly inconspicuous, at least. Not that it was the end of the world if Norman was seen talking to the boy, but getting interrupted during what as sure to be a serious chat was not something he wanted. Norman reached the boy, towering over his seated figure.
"Loki, it's been a little bit." Norman gave the boy a knowing smile. "What have you been up to? I haven't heard from you since our first meeting." Norman asked curiously, keeping things casual. He wanted to hear what Loki had to say before he set things into motion. After all, maybe the boy had good reasons for being so silent all this time.

Loki wished that he hadn't been sought out. He just wanted to try one day being a normal boy. No being picked on for being who he was, not having to deal with villains. He just wanted to have one day, one morning, just being a normal kid. Why was it so impossible? He sighed. Turning, the boy cast his green gaze out towards the ground that he could hear gathering and he took them in. People flocking like those greedy birds which wanted more bread and pecked around at the ground near him in hope. So the people seemed to do this to where Ikol had pointed out Osborn was. Loki considered making a break for it, to escape from the questions that he suspected Osborn would have but he suspected that would only certify suspicion in the mind of the businessman. There was no way that he could avoid this. He was stuck.
"This, Ikol, is why you should have kept us apart back at the zoo," He told the bird who just turned his head so he could fix the child with a beady eye. "It's not necessarily going to be something bad. He may have news for us." Ikol said, trying to sooth him. "Not the time I want to be sought out, even for good news. It's too early in the morning for anything like this." Loki said, despite being wide awake and fully ready to lie and so on if he needed to. Well, it had been fun pretending to be a hero for some time. Now he needed to get his villain hat back on, it seemed. To be fair, he did enjoy the villainous talk. It was fun to threaten other villains would with a taste of their own medicine.
"Life can't be all fun and games. You know this," Ikol told Loki who was watching the growing crowd. At least that gave him some time to prepare for this meeting. Get in the right frame of mind and so on. "It would be nice to not have to cope with all this business, though. Didn't you ever just want to escape it?" "I did. I died." "Not very comforting, villainous bird. You escaped being cast as evil but now what are we?" He asked. "You are what you want to be. You are Loki." It was a good answer as far as answers go.
Watching the crowd who seemed to be delighting in the presence, Loki felt a twinge of envy. He had never been able to change opinions about him that easily. Asgard still would kill him if Thor gave them the chance. The Warriors Three only protected him out of a promise to Thor. Odin had only kept him around because he believed Loki would be more dangerous if let loose on Midgard. No one changed their views on him, no matter how good he tried to be. That wasn't even getting to the kids his own age or the teenagers. Then other people didn't trust him because they could usually put two and two together. This was the only time he got to be free, when he was dressed like a Midgardian. And even then he was just a strange boy on his own, without parents. He suspected that some pitied him. Which was why he usually lied and said his parents were nearby or at home and had given him time to go and explore.
"He certainly is doing well at changing opinions about himself," Loki commented to Ikol. Both of them were watching with an interested gaze. "Well, that was part of your plan," Ikol reminded the boy after a few seconds and Loki nodded. "I suppose it was. I guess it's nice that part is working." It wasn't as nice as it would be if he could go home. "Well, I suppose it's time to be prepared," Loki sighed, looking around for some quiet place where they could chat. He found it in a staircase and he went to sit there, choosing to sit at a good height so he wouldn't have to look up. Height gave power. Or at least the illusion of it.
Finally, it seemed Osborn could break free of his adoring fans and Loki made sure that his face was neutral and that his eyes were glistening with his usual mischief. There had to be no slip. This would go perfect. This time he had time to prepare and compose himself. "Only a little bit," Loki replied with a grin on his face in return to the knowing smile. A little bit of time was shorter to gods. Probably. Definitely didn't seem very long when one kept amusing oneself with all that one could find. The child gave a stretch to make himself look at ease in response to Osborn's question. Lying and tricking was a fine art that didn't just involve words after all.
"Those stupid heroes are barely doing any work to find out how to get back. I've looked. And they haven't mentioned anything to me. I don't think they completely trust me yet." Loki said, putting venom in his voice as he spoke. "As for my silence, I'm trying to get closer to the heroes so they will tell me their plans. Nothing is as satisfying as watching those fools give up all their plans, thinking that it will do them good," He let out a chuckle at this and his eyes slipped over to Ikol who gave a small nod. Good, he wasn't overdoing it.
"I see you've done well at turning around public opinion. They seem to be eating out of your hand," Loki commented, keeping his voice cold with a hint of amusement. "But what about using your science to find a way back? How does that fare?" It was an attempt to turn the conversation over and onto Osborn's side of things rather than his own, while masquerading as a fellow villain asking a return question in a joint scheme that they both had. "That's my boy," Ikol said, knowing every move that Loki made. Loki felt uncomfortably like some form of amusement for Ikol all of a sudden.

Norman listened to Loki talk, and scrutinized every word. He had to be careful not to be swayed by the boy's silver tongue - getting off track was very easy when talking with the trickster, and he couldn't afford that. He needed to know Loki's true intentions, and needed to know he could trust the boy. "Loki, have you not had enough time to make some progress at this point? I'm not undermining your work, but you must have had plenty of opportunities." Norman crossed his arms as he spoke, watching Loki carefully. "After all, you are a god of deceit. This is your specialty, I thought. if they don't speak of anything useful you need to either extort it from them or remove them from the equation." Norman looked at the boy with scrutiny. "Since you won't let me kill any of the heroes, we are running out of time - every day more heroes enter this realm and threaten to stonewall our plans. We can't afford that."
Norman smirked at Loki's next comment. "As you should know, swaying the public is pretty simple once you get it down to a science." Norman grinned. "I've been in this position many times before, and always manage to turn it around." Norman was proud of that fact - he eluded accusations of being the Green Goblin for years, even with fools like Phil Urich trying to turn the tables on him. He positioned himself as the world's savior after the Skrull invasion. And now he was dismissing the public's negative opinions by simple speeches and interviews. It was a tedious task, but Norman was practiced at it.
"We haven't turned up anything." Norman's smile faded as he recalled his scientist's efforts. Nothing seemed to be able to breach the barrier - even trying to harness volatile energies like Darkforce was proving unfavorable. Being created from the power of the Infinity Gauntlet, Norman didn't even know if he had the resources to make any leeway. Even trying to make their own dimensional rifts was impossible - some sort of energy blocked them at every turn, which was infuriating to say the least."The Infinity Gauntlet is powerful, and I've never had to deal with such a strong magical energy before. We're going to keep trying, of course. But it's not looking good." Norman frowned, realizing that this course of conversation was getting them off track. Maybe that was Loki's plan. He had to push the conversation forward - he needed answers, and he needed proof.
"Loki, tell me something. You haven't been getting soft on me, have you?" Norman asked directly. There was no sense in beating around the bush - Norman didn't have time to play games. "After all, I think you've had plenty of opportunities to perform mischief and push our agenda, yet I have no results from you. No acts of treachery against the heroes. You are a god that has taken on the Avengers all at once before, and you claim to have no diminished capability based on your new form." Norman motioned at Loki's kid body. "Yet you are content to set around and twiddle your thumbs while our plans become more burdened by the hero menace. I think maybe you like staying the mansion, like being with your brother and the other imbeciles. Please, tell me I'm wrong." Norman narrowed his eyes. "And do be convincing."

Why do people always assume I'm lying?

Post by Loki Laufeyson on Aug 2, 2014 4:25:38 GMT -5
This was a game that Loki loved. Lying, manipulation and deceit. It was part of who he was and he wished that it wasn't. But it was the tools that he had been born with and so the tools he must use. It would be stupid for him to try and be like the other heroes. To save everyone, he had to do it in Loki's way. "Progress is delicate, Osborn. I can't have it fly in within seconds and then disappear like one of your jetplanes. No. This is something that has to stick. I have been an enemy of Midgard for longer than you have. Much longer. To suddenly change my ways would not ease their suspicions of me. And to do it with speed would end with them eventually cottoning on before our plan is done. Do not make the presumption that I have the same crowd to make up to, the same sins, as some might call them, as you. My crimes are much greater and the heroes, as brainless as they are, are not ordinary mortals. You are merely looking at a bees nest after swatting one. I have broken the nest and am standing in the middle of the swarm and I am still not stung. So think carefully, Norman before you speak." Usually using the surname would be more threatening but Loki made sure to pronounce Norman just right for the majority of threat to be placed there. Do not question Loki.
For once, Ikol was silent. Or maybe Loki was ignoring him.
Listening to what Norman had to say about swaying public opinion made Loki jealous. For all his cunning words and mischief, he had not been able to sway the opinions of the Asgardians. They had spent what must have been centuries against him and they had suffered the most. Even if as a kid he had never committed any crime against them (or the Midgardians) they didn't trust him. They still wanted his skin. Despite the fact that he had done his best to help save them. But this was not something that he was going to share with Norman. It was of no importance in this world. The heroes did seem to trust him somewhat with very little effort. "Good. The public will be our way to rule. And to crush any heroes who do manage to stand in our way once we have everything." Loki said, careful not to share his plan too much. Because it was not a plan that he would use. Just the carrot to dangle infront of Osborn.
The distraction seemed to be working and Loki listened carefully to his words, taking things in. Right, science was proving to not work, just like his magic. And Loki needed to keep this part of the conversation up, make sure that Norman didn't question him. "Have you tried seeing how far up we can go? I've found the paths to the other nine realms blocked but if we can get to other worlds, that may help our cause. We can still see the sun, the moon and the stars. So that has got to be a start. Of course, to counter the infinity gauntlet, we're likely to need a similar energy signature or something of more power, no doubt..." Loki said thoughtfully, throwing ideas out there. He had gone to the library to read up on mortal science. He hoped that maybe using some of that now would help to keep in in the good books of this man. Loki wanted home. Everyone needed to go back home. He didn't care whether it came from a hero or villain, so long as he could use it.
Alas, it seemed not to work as he had hoped as Osborn spoke once more, asking if he had become soft. The boy's lips were pressed together as he took in these words. Right. More lies and trying to convince this villain he was on his side. The game could never be gone for long. Good thing he enjoyed all of this. As he listened, he made his eyes seem harsher and his jaw clenched until there was a look on his face of hatred. "You'd think that I would side with the heroes?" He spat, eyes seeming to glow with a fury. He stood up and used the steps he was sitting on to give him extra height. He knew that being the height of a small boy would ruin his threatening appearance and climbing up them would bring attention to his new body which Osborn had already unjustly done. So he was fortunate to have started on the steps.
"What have those heroes ever done for me? They have beaten me and left me battered. And who does it more than my own brother, Thor? The heroes have given me nothing but pain and grief. Perhaps I give it back, but it is never enough. Even as I am, all of Asgard would cry for my death if they stood here, despite all my lies. Or perhaps because of it. Let their world burn, let them suffer. I don't want the heroes, I don't want Asgard. I just want my own world. And to get my own world, I have to leave what Thanos has created and locked us in. I am no pet to keep in a box. I am the God of Chaos. I will not be contained. And if that means having to spend time tricking the mortals, then I shall. No matter how long it takes. I had not thought that you would have been taken in by my work." Loki said, before a sly smile slithered onto his face. "Or perhaps you are more willing to be Thanos' pet in this little bird cage he has for us. After all, I'm getting the heroes to work for us without them knowing and you question it. I hope you aren't enjoying this imprisonment and trying to stop me getting out," He said, tone suddenly going silky smooth.

Norman was taken aback by Loki. He had pushed the master of trickery, a god among mortals, and the boy was retaliating. Norman had forgotten that despite his new appearance, Loki was just as fearsome as any other god Norman had encountered. He may have had the stature of a boy, but he could be every bit as fearsome as Ares by using words alone. He didn't want to break their alliance - Loki was Norman's only friend. He took a step back, listening to the boy as he challenged Norman's accusations. Norman could feel his forehead start to perspire as his mind searched for his next move, rooting through words, actions, weighing the possible outcomes of anything he could do.
"Norman, you're a fool. You're soft. You would grovel at this boy's feet? You think he holds sway over us??" The Goblin snarled in Norman's head, trying to get the man roused. "This boy may be an Asgardian, but that doesn't matter now - he's stuck here, same as us. In a world where we have all the power and all the resources. He is a BOY!" The Goblin danced on Norman's brain. "You came here to make sure he was loyal to us and he is turning the tables around. THE BOY HAS A SILVER TONGUE AND WE NEED TO CUT. IT. OUT! HAHAHAHA!!!" The Goblin cackled, screeching in Norman's head. The man wiped his brow, focusing his mind and shushing the voice. But he knew the Goblin was right - Loki was gaining the upper hand by sleight of words alone. He came here to ensure their alliance was airtight, and he needed to stay on that path.
Norman adjusted his tie and cleared his throat, returning Loki's gaze. He stood up straight, now looking up at the boy that was standing on the steps. "Loki, I don't mean to accuse you. But you're the only trump card we have, and I'm worried we are going to lose that advantage the longer we wait. I understand it's not easy infiltrating the Avengers' plans, but the window will just get smaller and smaller as more of them flood in." Norman calmly explained. His tone with soft with a hard edge to it, letting Loki know he wasn't going to waiver. The madness that existed in Norman's head was an unbalancing force, but he was glad it gave him the focus he needed in times like this. It felt good letting the Goblin back into his life. "I don't mean to cast doubt on your position." Norman crossed his arms and cocked his head, looking coolly at the man-turned-boy. "But if your stance is as you say it is, perhaps you wouldn't mind a demonstration? It won't take long, I assure you. Just a simple way for you to prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that you are the same Loki I once knew. You can't blame me - after all, you are the lord of mischief and deceit, and hold that title high above anyone else." Norman looked around smoothly, making sure they hadn't drawn a crowd. Luckily, there was a large tour group on their way out, so that would clear up some of the clutter.
"It's a simple offer, Loki. You do this one thing and you won't have me doubting you ever again." Norman gazed back up at the boy with a smile.

Loki couldn't afford for Osborn to doubt him. Things were serious and if he lost the help of his villain friend, that meant that the heroes were alone. Loki was well aware that he was the only bridge and it was a useful thing to be. If Norman found out a way back... and if he followed Loki's plan and Loki was not believed to be an ally... Well, then Loki would be stuck here until he himself could figure out the way back. Unless the heroes beat him to it. And even then, how much could he trust that they would bring him back? More than he could trust Osborn if he broke off ties with the young trickster.
So as there seemed to be a silence, enough for an internal conversation, Loki worried. What could be the cause of this silence? He doubted that Norman could have something in his mind like Ikol. Could he? It seemed terribly like a break to talk to someone else. Loki knew what it was like to have someone you could talk to but no one else could see. But he spoke allowed to Ikol. And it was easy to forget that the magpie was only in his mind. Norman didn't speak out loud. Green eyes narrowed slightly, trying to figure what this silence was for. Osborn was stressed, Loki could tell this much. Norman had wiped his brow after the silence and before he started talking again. Was something up?
Lips pressed together at Osborn's words and Loki kept a harsh glare as he stared at the mortal. Right, now was the time for evil. He had to be in character. Think evil thoughts. Like world domination, not caring for others and not letting children eat bacon and other breakfast meats. Green eyes noticed a large tour leaving. That wasn't good. An audience was much more important. And if he was left alone... Loki was painfully aware that his spells were limited. He seriously needed to get Ikol to teach him some more. They now had time. And magic would be useful for escaping from this trap.
"Are you trying to order me, Norman?" Loki asked, making his voice sound as dangerous and the young god could muster. "I am not a creature that needs to prove itself to you, am I? He leaned forwards slightly, as if he were examining the human with cold eyes as if summing up the worth of Osborn himself. If Osborn was going to threaten their partnership, then Loki would do his best to make this mortal feel like he was on the receiving end, if not more. If he could scare Norman into obeying him and following him blindly, then he would. The villains liked this sort of persona, anyway. So there was no harm in using it against them. The boy let a wicked smile cross his face.
"I plan for us to leave this place. All the heroes of the universes could be here and we would still come out top because of me. And you want proof. Perhaps I should show my destructive force. Would you like to be the one who has to face me? I am not someone to take lightly. And I work my way. Loki's way. I will cheat the heroes and I will steal their hope all to come out top. So think carefully before you say your next words Osborn." Loki knew that he could just hope that whatever Osborn set for a task wouldn't be too bad but the boy didn't want to risk it. There was no way he was going to tarnish his beautiful heroism. There was so much good he had yet to do. He had created too much bad. He had to get this right so he could make it up to the universe.

"The boy mocks us. We need to kill him - why do you fumble around with this brat? We owe him nothing!" The Green Goblin yelled in Norman's head at Loki's defiance. There was no insane laughter to follow it, just pure anger and annoyance. Norman didn't know if that was true or not. Loki had been with him during his time running HAMMER - he was a good ally. While everyone else was busy watching their back around Norman, Loki has happy to indulge in idle conversation and vast ploys, no matter how much of a long shot they seemed. Loki was his right hand man, advising him on matters that felt out of control, telling him what to do and say when he was under the microscope.
But it had been Loki's idea to seize Asgard, hadn't it? Did he know it would end in defeat? Was he toying with Norman the whole time, making him dance like a marionette? Norman knew he would never get that answer, so he shelved the topic and instead met Loki's fiery gaze with a glare of his own. "Loki, you don't scare me." Norman spoke, surprised at the steeled will in his voice. "You want me to believe you truly haven't lost any of your magnitude? Then show me - if you have the guts to try and destroy me, if you're that stupid, then I implore you to act on those impulses. The fact of the matter is that you're stuck here with me." Norman waved an arm toward the city of New York. "With all of them! You kill me or even lay a super-powered finger on me and your name will be plastered everywhere. The heroes will come. They'll fight you. And with no getaway scheme to retreat to Asgard, you'll be out of luck. And you. Will. Fall." Norman emphasized the last words harshly. He had many people threaten him before, but noone as powerful as Loki. Still, the playing field was unchanged - the power of the people was a very real thing, and even Loki had limits to what he could do to Norman without getting jumped on by every hero around.
Norman stood up straighter, his confidence growing. He knew that he couldn't let Loki bully him around. The boy may have been the mastery of trickery, but in this world, Norman held control. He had the public on his side, and Loki didn't have anywhere else to go. They would have to meet in the middle to get anywhere, and he needed solid evidence that Loki wasn't going to spin around and lay a dagger in Norman's back - literally or metaphorically.
"I'm not asking for anything extraordinary, Loki. But if we are truly going to work together, I need to make sure I can trust you. I need to make sure you're the same man I have worked with before. A lot has changed since then - you've changed since then." Norman crossed his arms but still keep his steady gaze. "You're a trickster Loki, using and abusing people comes with the territory. I just have to make sure I'm not your latest victim. I know that in my place, you would have the same request."

There was no way that Loki was going to let on that he was scared. He was scared what would happen if Osborn figured him out. How would he make sure that his plan wasn't used against him? Loki had proposed it to be believable. And the best way to be believable was to say the truth. It was a brilliant plan, in his own mind. To be able to get portals between here and there, to use them. To trap the heroes here. Could his attempt to be good lead to more evil? Loki's fists were clenched and even with his short nails, he could feel them digging into his skin. How could he make sure that Osborn... The Green Goblin... was on his side.
And there was no way he was going to committ an act of evil to cement his position.
Taking in Osborn's words with a steely coldness to his figure, Loki kept his eyes ablaze with anger like green leaves dancing in the flames of a wildfire that devoured all. Inside, however, he was wavering. Norman sounded so set in his lack of fear of the child. "I won't lay a finger on you, Osborn," Loki said softly, eyes glinting like arrow heads in the sunlight. "I can break down everything you've tried to build. I can destroy the reputation you've tried so hard to make. What's to stop me doing that if you decide to back out on me?" Loki asked, doing his best to keep his voice casual to conflict with the fierce gaze he was giving to the mortal. It was at times like this that Loki wished Thor was around. If only he could come down from the heavens, clad in red and full of thunder to end this.
Osborn made a good arguement and Loki knew that the mortal was being reasonable. But if Loki was to be the hero, which he wanted, the request was too difficult. Loki couldn't go and cause chaos or kill people. The boy wouldn't go and steal - although stealing from Osborn himself was becoming an appealing idea to the child. "I'm also the god of evil, Osborn. What evil would happen if I were to kill you? I would stand alone to carve my own path. Better have us two against the heroes than two seperately or even one alone. I just look to the future for a greater evil. You seem a bit short sighted if you can't bare to wait out until the die are cast,"
Loki dreaded to ask what it was that Osborn wanted Loki to do to prove himself to be on the side of evil. How would he keep up the game then? There was no way that he could use magic to pretend that such a scene had happened and there would be little way to use words to help him escape from the task that the other might set down. How would the boy cope with that? Loki was well aware that he was almost all word with no force behind what he could offer. It was a bad situation to be in but it was the one that he had been born into so it was something that he just had to deal with.

Loki was stalling and trying to talk his way out of things. He was wasting time by presenting more arguments for Norman to sift through, more threats for him to wade in, and more rationale for him to navigate. It was becoming exhausting, but a part of Norman enjoyed the mental foreplay that was occurring, before either one of them got what they really wanted. There wasn't much compromise to be had - either Norman would get what he wanted or he wouldn't - though he was confident things were in his favor. Loki, for all his cool words, confrontational demeanor, and intricate scheming, was on the back foot - at least Norman perceived it that way. He couldn't be sure if that was actually true or if the Goblin formula was fueling his confidence to insane heights.
He didn't really care.
"You're right Loki. We must unite as a team. But in times like these we need to trust each other unconditionally." Norman put his hands out in an open gesture. "You and I have both manipulated numerous people, numerous pawns in our schemes. And from that, you and I both have felt the sting of a betrayal, seen mountains of meticulous planning crumble due to one person's backstabbing." Norman brought his arms back in and folded them, tilting his head upright to look at the child, his cold eyes fixated on the boy. "This is one situation where we cannot afford that to happen, no matter what. I cannot take any risks with all these heroes about. You may be insulted that I need this of you, but I am only covering all my bases. And if you really are playing the long game, you know that I need your trust to go along with it."
Norman's disposition was calm, but only due to the Goblin formula coursing through his veins. He found that many of his challenges seemed meager since he had become exposed to it. He was sure that his unraveled lunacy had something to do with it, but he had enough willpower to make sure he didn't come completely undone. At least not since The Gathering of Five. He had control over the formula's influence upon him and had become one with the Goblin. They were working together instead of in opposition, and it made him that much more powerful. The Goblin grinned devilishly in his mind in acknowledgement.
"So Loki, if you truly want to work towards a great evil together, I need you to do one simple thing for me." Norman spoke again. "There is a homeless man I found on the streets that was making a lot of racket, specifically about you. He claimed to have seen Loki, the evil god, on Earth, and even pinpointed that you are disguised in the form of a boy. Worse, he also has been yelling to whoever will listen that you and I talked - he saw us at the zoo!" Norman laughed with a scrutinizing tone. "Of course, noone has believed him yet, but I went through the efforts of tying him up and bringing him here so that you could have the pleasure of torturing him yourself. I'll let you do whatever you want - play cruel tricks, turn him into a frog, make him go insane....you can even kill him, if you like. I just want to know you're the same Loki I once knew without a doubt. If you want, I'm equally happy to do something for you afterwards. And I won't even complain." Norman flashed a sly, teasing smirk. The old Loki he knew would jump at the chance of getting to torture a human, especially one that thought they knew about Loki's presence. This would be a true test to make sure the boy was the same as the man Norman remembered.

There was really only one place to go at this point. And that was panic. None of Loki's previous advisaries had needed proof because they took things for granted. Osborn was human. Osborn was mortal. And Osborn was clever. All these things made it a lot harder to cool someone, Loki had managed to forget. Humans liked to have proof, mortals (especially those that played around with gods) were hyper aware of their mortality and thos clever people... Well, they were just always aware of things. It made for a deadly combination. One that demanded more from a relationship than deals with supernatural beings. And what proof could Loki give that would actually satisfy Osborn. If he could he would and save this problem
It was a hopeless situation, really. ALl Loki could do at this point was try and delay and it was not something he wanted to do. The child was defeated. He had over looked mortals and their ways. Unless things realy suddenly turned around like them both getting attacked, this partnership was going to end. The trickster just prayed not too violently, which was always a worrying possibility. What would he do if Osborn did manage to attack him? Could the man really risk this in public? Loki knew he needed to stay in view of the general crowd. he was powerless. Something Osborn didn't know but there was no way the mortal needed to find out any time soon.
Then the stone dropped. The task was set. Loki's stomach churned at the whole idea. It made everything seem so much more real. That was who he once was. That was the sort of thing at Osborn dealt with. Torture. Driving others insane. Straight out killing. And Loki was aware that was only really a tiny section of the list of transgressions that he had done. If only he could not be that person! Get that blood off his hands. But Loki felt stained, despite his lack of memories. It only meant he had to prove himself a hero. If that was the case, then so be it. He would go out with a bang rather than a whimper. If Osborn had a trapped innocent, the hero would rescue. It was as simple as that.
"Hm... This does sound like fun," Loki said, doing his best to sound like he was entertaining thoughts of torture and other such malicious deeds. "I do need to find out what gave it away and what better way to exract information other than torture?" He asked, hoping he wasn't laying it on too thick and was sounding genuinly interested. Time to save the nameless homeless guy, just like Thor woud. Maybe the other heroes would accept him more if he did this and lost his reputation amoung the villains. He prayed he would gain some favour in return for saving a life. Norns new he was owed at least something in this bird cage.

Norman smiled a devilish grin at hearing Loki's response. He adjusted his suit jacket and looked at the boy hopefully, a grin still on his face. "Then follow me." Norman gestured for Loki to follow, taking out a phone from his pocket and typing '1' to activate the Speed Dial. Norman held the phone to his ear and glanced back to see if Loki was following before continuing on, walking towards one of the private pier areas.
"Ready?" The deep voice on the other end of the phone spoke as soon as the dialtone ended. It was one of Norman's Scriers, a mysterious cult that have been around for centuries. Under Norman's leadership, their group became more formidable and worked with Norman to increase their global agenda, worshiping Norman for his abilities and powers after he defied his own death. They had long worked in the background to help Norman's schemes and plans, and they were his only real source of trust in this brave new world.
"Yes." Norman spoke quickly, exiting the call and putting the phone in his pocket once more. Two guards stood at the beginning of the pier, eyeing Norman stoically as he approached them. At the end of the dock was a large white houseboat tied to the pier. It was a well-designed ship, though not exactly top of the line, and sported some wear and tear on the sides. Norman reached into his jacket and pulled out two folded up sheets of paper, giving them to one of the guards who nodded at Norman in acknowledgement. They were docking permits Norman had acquired from the city. With most of the public on his side now, he was seen as somewhat of a philanthropist, and getting the papers to have a ship docked was not all that difficult. People were less inclined to care that a boat was parked at a tourist attraction when there were no tourists, after all.
"Thank you." Norman spoke to the guard with a warm smile and continued on, nodding back at Loki. He pressed on, advancing to the houseboat and stepping onto it carefully, causing it to rock slightly with the waves. The door in front of him unlocked with a loud CLACK and slid open, revealing a tall man in a hooded jacket, his face almost completely obscured in the shadow of the houseboat's upper deck. He nodded slightly and stepped aside for Norman's entry. The Scrier's hardly ever talked, if at all, and that worked out fine for Norman. He found it was easier to have underlings when they didn't say anything. "Right through here, Loki." Norman smiled and walked into the room, a dimly lit area with no windows.
The houseboat was not one on the inside, having been gutted and renovated to be nothing more than a torture chamber. The walls were reinforced metal and a rack of tools was present on one wall, some with bloodstains still on them. Chains and hooks lined the opposite wall, along with ropes and other assorted equipment. Two dim lightbulbs hung from the ceiling as the only light source, but the real attraction was in the back corner of the room, where a scruffy man in ragged clothes was tied to a metal chair bolted to the floor. He was unconscious, his head tilted forward in a passive position, but had no visible injuries. Norman wasn't one to get his hands dirty all the time, but sometimes his plans required a hands on approach, or his pawns needed places like this get their jobs don. Either way, the houseboat had served its purpose time and time again, and was one of Norman's longest lasting hideouts.
As soon as Norman and Loki entered the chamber, the Scrier left the room, heading to the exterior of the houseboat to undock the vessel. Norman slid the large metal door closed afterward, slamming down the metal bar into place and twisting the reinforced bolt lock. Norman gazed down at Loki with a smile. He was pleased at this turn of events - he finally had Loki right he wanted him. The boy would show his true colors, his true loyalties, and there would be no doubts in Norman's mind ever again. He would have a partner to work with, an ally he could trust without any second thoughts.
"You don't have to worry Loki, this place is a veritable fortress. No one is going to get in or out of here without my say so - no one will ever find out about this. These walls are reinforced so that even the strongest electronic signals can't pierce them, so I can assure you no one is spying on us, either." Norman leaned against the back wall opposite of the victim in the chair, feeling the cold metal even through his layered clothes. "Alright, it's showtime." Norman spoke, gesturing outwards with his arms.

Things had gone to bad to even be considered bad, now, the trickster thought as he examined what could only be described as a prison. Green eyes had watched as the metal door was closed, sealing his way out. If Osborn could get out, Loki knew that he should be able to. But that metal bar looked awfully heavy. And he would have to undo the lock first and that would give Osborn time. His gut twisted uncomfortably. He was trapped. The boat was being undocked. What was it they advised all over the internet? Don't get into cars with strangers. Loki hated having to keep up a face. He should have left. He should have done the best to preserve his own life rather than try be a hero.
No. Being a hero was what he needed to be. That evil he had to make up for. For every bad action he had to make up with nine more good ones. That was a lot of good things to do.
Osborn's words weren't of any comfort. A veritable fortress. Well, Loki needed to get himself and the poor victim safely out of the lair of his enemy. Stay calm. Stay calm. The boy told himself. He was just a child! He couldn't take on this! Where was Thor? Thor was always there when Loki needed him. How was he meant to wiggle out of this? Loki was tired of all this double crossing. Right. Well, there were only three of them in here. If the stranger could at least keep Osborn off Loki's back while Loki opened the door. Then they only had to get past all the others... Why had he not left earlier? Why had he not escaped. How did he think he could do this all by himself?
It was not comforting to notice that Ikol had followed them inside.
Green eyes focused on the scruffy man. Right. So time for the master plan. What was that going to be. Escape. Yeah. Let's work with that, Loki thought. With a curt nod to Osborn, Loki walked forward and past Ikol to the captured man. Green eyes considered the restraints. Right. Those he could undo with speed. You should kill him. We need Norman's support more than you need this man alive. This one act would solve your problems. You won't be questioned. Not any more. Ikol tempted in the back of Loki's skull. "Shut up." Loki muttered to Ikol as he crouched before the man and took his pulse. Still alive. Good. Not a trap.
The man shuddered awake and the touch with a start and Loki hurriedly leaned forward to whisper into the man's ear as the stranger quivered in fear. "Don't panic. I'm here to help. I'm not who you think I am. When I've got you free, distract Osborn. Attack him or something. I'll open the door. Then we escape the boat and swim or leap for freedom. For now act like I just said something totally and utterly horrifying and you are terrified of me," Loki instructed. He didn't think much acting was involved. The man was shaking in fear, eyes wide and Loki just prayed that he didn't faint on him. That would prove to be problematic.
"Now tell me, how did you recognise me?" Loki demanded, voice suddenly raised as he stood before the man, trying to be scary for Osborn's sake. The stranger jumped at this and tried to pull away. Loki sighed. He wouldn't have minded an answer to that. "Speak while you still have a tongue!" He ordered and he heard Ikol compliment him. The magpie was happy with the way things were taken in. Loki hoped this meant that the watching parties were taken in by the trickery. Turning suddenly, the child looked at Osborn sharply.
"I'm taking the restraints off him. I might as well have a bit of fun and I can't do that with him all tied up. Just make sure you don't throw up while I'm working," Ok... there was a casual reference to Black Adder. Loki had marathoned that TV series a few days ago and this situation somewhat reminded him of the French dungeon and the Scarlet Pimpernel thing. He just hoped things turned out better for him. Loki! Don't do this. You're making an enemy out of an ally! Ikol protested as Loki hurried to free the stranger, giving a slight nod to the man, hoping that he would spring into action so Loki could get them out. The restraints fell to the floor.
((OOC Note: Hope this is OK. If anything needs changing, just tell me. ^^ ))
