She possesses an above-average strength for a girl of her age, engaging in intense regular exercise to keep herself in top shape.
Mary Jane carries a gun, but also uses special webshooters build into bracelets that she can wear secretly, giving her an additional defense. She also carries a modified spider-tracer with an amplified signal that can be traced over long distances.
HISTORY
Mary Jane is the second daughter of parents Madeline and Philip Watson. Her older sister Gayle predated her by a good four years as her mother chased her father around the country trying to become an aspiring writer. Unable to succeed academically, Philip's answer turned on his family. While Madeline was willing to suffer her husband's wrath personally, she would not let her children suffer. Madeline abandoned her husband while he was away at an awards ceremony, bouncing herself and her two children to and from whatever relative would take them in. This early experience would cloud Mary Jane's upbringing, escaping from her home life during her school years by acting out in the forms of exuberant party-life and class-clown mentality behavior. Mary Jane eventually wound up with her Aunt Anna, a woman whom was close friends with May Parker. After frequent attempts to hook them up, Aunt May finally arranged for Peter to meet "that Watson girl next door", who dated Peter for some time after she shocked him by showing up at this door for their first encounter. Their dating annoyed Gwen Stacy, who would wind up replacing Mary Jane as Peter's girlfriend when he could no longer take Mary Jane's superficial attitude, moving on to Harry Osborn. They would late reunite some time after Gwen Stacy's death, having been a loss to both of them as Mary Jane had considered Gwen a friend for some time despite sharing Peter at times. They would break up and get back together several times over the next few years, often as a result of either her unwillingness to settle down or his refusal to give up the mantle of Spider-Man.
They would eventually marry, finally realizing she was ready to be with Peter. During this time, she became pregnant, only to later have a stillborn child. She deeply regretted this, knowing in her heart she was meant to have a child with Peter. Between the baby, the Clone Saga, and the pressures of being held captive by a crazy stalker, Mary Jane left to Los Angeles to continue acting. The two would reunite during the events of Civil War, being taken in by the Avengers for a time. Shortly after, she was detained for questioning by SHIELD, refusing to surrender Spider-Man to them.
Despite Peter's best efforts, he could never shake the constant threat of losing his Aunt May. When she was shot, not even the combined finances of Tony Stark and the expertise of Doctor Strange could save her. In the end, it requires the demonic pact with the extradimensional being known as Mephisto to save her life - at the cost of Peter and Mary Jane's marriage and subsequent happiness. With a deadline of the offer pending, the two reluctantly agree to erase their marriage from history, under the added conditions that Peter's secret identity be restored and that Peter's life be put back the way it was (an addendum from Mary Jane) so that he might have a chance at happiness. This ended their marriage, splitting the two in a way they never imagined.
Mary Jane continued her career, having a brief failed relationship with actor Bobby Carr. This led her back to New York, where her and Peter attempted to meet each other. This meeting failed on both parts, as both were drunk for different reasons. It was revealed however, that Mary Jane was aware that Peter Parker was Spider-Man. The two remain close, but she refuses to marry him as she believes it is unfair to try to raise children with someone that is actively Spider-Man. When the events of the attempted marriage played out the second time, Peter missed the ceremony due to being unconscious - a direct result of Mephisto's doing as per the stipulations of their agreement. Aunt May is revived by CPR, and Mephisto's deal is concluded. Mary Jane, unable to cope with him being Spider-Man, calls it off despite the protestations of her Aunt Anna. The looming threat of people knowing he is Spider-Man worsens, as Mary Jane is later injured. This injury, while healed by Doctor Strange, puts the final excalamation point on the dangers of Peter's career as Spider-Man. It is then decided and agreed by themselves, as well as Reed Richards and Tony Stark, that collective memory of his unmasking is too dangerous. Doctor Strange is then asked to help everyone forget that he was ever Spider-Man, and at the last moment Parker pulls Mary Jane into the same protective sphere he was in, protecting both of their memories. When they awaken in a motel, Mary Jane asked him why he couldn't let her forget. It is only a matter of time if the person with Spider-Man is targeted, and that is a threat no family should have to endure. She then lets him go.
Mary Jane would encourage Peter's relationship with Carlie Cooper, but it was not to last. She would break up with him after the events of Spider-Island, angry that she hid his identity as Spider-Man from her. Mary Jane and Peter later spent a moment on the Empire State Building once the crisis was over, and she now remains as his close friend and confidant.
ROLE-PLAYING SAMPLE
The great Boeing 747 sped across the night sky over New York City. Mary Jane Watson say quietly in her seat in first class, sleeping comfortably. Her face was a sight of serene beauty, resting comfortably as the Enya playlist on her ipod played to keep her asleep through the gentle turbulence the plane was having. The plane was beginning its descent into Manhattan, and her skin felt the light cool touch of the window against it. There was a faint bump in the plane, and she jostled awake as she heard a sinister laughter. MJ's eyes flew open, and she looked into the glass window as she saw the sight of the Green Goblin's horrific visage looking back at her. She let out a bark of fright, pulling down the shade on the window in reflex. She let out a deep, frightened gasp as she slowly lifted the shade. Out beyond the plane was the simple New York skyline.
Mary Jane leaned back in her seat, rubbing her eyes as she shook the false image from her mind. She reached up with delicate fingers, pulling the earbuds from her ears as she turned off the music. She took a deep breath, her fingers digging into the arm rests as she saw the steward approaching her seat.
"Is there anything I can get you, Miss Watson?" the brushed up thirty-something asked her.
"Uh.. a water. Please. Cold, if you have one." she said shakily.
"Right away, Miss Watson." he replied, heading back to the Cabin.
She sat in her seat, adjusting her seatbelt a few times as the red light had turned on while they began their descent. The steward returned a moment later with the cold bottle, which she began to drink down eagerly after her hands spun the cap off. She was nervous, and not because of the plane. She had just finished a movie in Los Angeles, and she had not been in New York in a while now. But mostly, she missed Peter. She pulled out her cell phone, looking down at the useless communication device in her palm. She wouldn't be able to access it until she landed, which only added to her growing frustrations. Since Los Angeles she had no calls or texts waiting for her. He was probably asleep, or just in the shower, or...
Oh, who was she kidding? He was probably hanging upside down on a street corner, making fun of Electro's outfit while saving an oncoming police car from a nasty electic shock. She covered her eyes for a moment as she set the bottle down in the armrest cup holder. Why? Why did she do this to herself. She had the worst luck in men. Harry Osborn. Bobby Carr. Peter Parker. Why did everyone she date wind up having some horrible complex attached to them? She picked the bottle back up, and mentally considered going to the gym right after she landed to hit the weight room and burn off some energy and anxiety. The plane touched down, and she eagerly unbuckled her belt and gathered her things.
Two hours later she had fully unpacked, and took herself up on her own self-offer to go the gym. Mary Jane was in the weight room, wearing a pair of spandex pants and a sports bra as she carefully pulled on the cords, the 50 pound weights moving up and down as she focused her breathing. Why does he do this do her? Why couldn't he just answer the phone, like a normal person? The age of beepers was dead. He could have answered, or even texted her back. Something? Mary Jane let out a few grunts as she finished her set, letting the weights clank down as she panted faintly. She crossed her arms over the machine, resting her forehead on it as she began running through reasons why he ignored her messages and texts. Maybe his cell was in a bag before he changed costumes? Maybe it was destroyed? Maybe... maybe she should just go to bed? She flicked her fingers in an out, wiping the sweat from her brow with her towel as she slowly got up from the bench. She didn't have Peter's spider-sense, but she did get bad feelings. And right now she felt like she was being watched. She turned her head slowly, seeing the older man near the doorway watching her. She immediately got the creepy-vibes from him, her eyes catching his for a moment as she looked him over. He was thin, wearing a scraggily coat and disheveled hair. He looked more like someone that begged for change than someone that would be at a 24 hour gym late at night.
"Hey. You're her, aintcha?" the man asked her, slightly hunched over as he ogled her.
"Her who?" Mary Jane asked, immediately sliding over to her duffel bag and throwing her towel around her neck.
"Dat girl! From dat movie. Wit da guy. You had da..." he gestured, holding his hands out from his chest with a lustful smirk.
Mary Jane resisted the urge to vomit, grabbing her windbreaker and tossing it on as she closed it shut over her breasts. She quickly gathered her things, putting them all up in her duffel bag as she moved as quickly as she could without looking suspicious.
"I don't know what you are talking about...." she lied, taking up her bag.
"Yeah, yeah. You had dat one scene, where your shirt ripped, right? And we could almost see like, da whole shazam!" he said, still blocking the door.
Mary Jane was getting annoyed. Yes, she had done a movie recently where her shirt was ripped. It was a horror movie, and like all horror movies there were certain testosterone driven elements that sold movie tickets. While she was never ashamed of using her breasts to get ahead in life, having this creep stare at her at 2 in the morning in a gym was the height of perverse weirdness.
"I need to get going. See you around." she said quietly, slinging the bag over her shoulder as she moved to slide past him in the doorway. She was hoping to get out quickly, but that didn't stop the creepy guy from reaching out and copping a tight feel of her backside. Her eyes went wide, and she lashed out, the back of her fist striking him across the face. The man let out an OOF! as he staggered backward, and she was suddenly immediately grateful for the weight training she was doing. While initially part of her desire to land the role in the upcoming Heather Armstrong movie to get herself into the action movie genre, her working out was now paying off as it nailed this guy much harder than he was expecting. He let out a curse word, and then started to run after her!
Mary Jane ran out the front door, and made an immediate left. There was no time to try and flag a cab, or a cop. Not at this hour. Instead she made right for the alleyway. Normally a death sentence for women of her build and age, she knew exactly what she was looking for. She had seen enough alleys with Peter to know what to do. With a burst of athleticism, she leaped up on a trash can, then up atop the dumpster, and then flung her hands up to the bottom of the fire escape. She grunted, pulling upward as she saw her little biceps pop and flex, urging her entire body up as she then snatched the next set of rungs, hauling herself up. She heard the creep down below her, screaming at her as she almost smirked to herself.
You're not the only one that can climb, Tiger.
She hit the top of the ladder, running about toward the top of the building as she reached into her duffel bag. She got to the top of the roof, landing on it with a pant. Mary Jane dug inside, pulling out the small little spider-shaped bug from her purse, slapping it on the back of her cell phone as she pressed the button. The Spider-Tracer went off, sending the frequency out towards the city, wherever Spider-Man might be.
"Come on, Peter. Answer the phone this time..." she muttered in the New York darkness. She always carried the small red and blue tracer on her somewhere. Even after all they had been through and split up, she always kept it on her, the same way one might keep a treasured photo in their wallet. The phone let out a faint beep as the tracer connected to the phone's signal to better reach out across New York. No sooner had it done so, then she felt a horrible sound crack above her. The flights over New York seemed to scatter, when she saw the blinking lights of a plane high above her simply vanish. An explosive display of color and energy swirled above her, as the wind picked up and began to scatter her hair about her face. She ducked down low, covering her ears at the thunderclap. A twinge of fear shot up her spine, as she felt a strange shifting feeling deep in her soul she hadn't felt since the last time she was near Mephisto. She swallowed the dry lump in her throat, looking up above her as the world itself seemed to tilt and churn, and she didn't need a spider-sense to know that something had just gone terribly, awfully wrong.
She suddenly regretted getting on that plane to New York.
